Agatha All Alongdebuted its first two episodes on Disney+ on June 04, 2025, just in time to kick off the spooky season. The series is a spin-off of the popularWandaVisionand follows the character of Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn) as she attempts a trip down the Witches' Road with a coven of witches and a mysterious teen to regain her powers. It is the latest series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, arriving in the middle of Phase 5.

Agatha All Along

Like all MCU projects,Agatha All Alongfeatures many Easter eggs and references. The series features callbacks to other MCU projects and deep cuts from Marvel Comics. It also has a particular interest in witch references. From real-life connections to the Salem Witch Trials to famous witches in pop culture,Agatha All Along’s first two episodes feature plenty of references that enrich the series and might hint at some big things to come in the future.

10Prestige TV References

Agatha All Along’sfirst episode is done in the style of a prestige crime drama. This is a reference to howWandaVisionsaw Wanda’s hex trap people in a spell design to resemble classic television setups. Where that was comedic sitcoms,Agatha All Alongis pulling from crime dramas likeMare of EasttownandTrue Detective.

TheMare of Easttowninfluence is clear as the series beginning follows a very similar flow toEasttown’s early episode where Kate Winslet’s character Mare is sent to investigate a dead body found by a creek. Here, Agatha does the same, with the victim seemingly being an unnamed Wanda Maximoff, aka The Scarlet Witch. Hahn’s outfit in the first episode is also designed to resemble the same one worn by Kate Winslet inMare of Easttown.

Disney Should Put These Heroes Together for MCU’s The Midnight Suns

The Midnight Suns are a collection of heroes taking on magical threats. Let’s see who would be a good fit for the team in the MCU.

The “opening credits” of the episode call the seriesAgatha of Westview, a play onMare of Easttown.Mare of Easttowndoes not feature an opening credit sequence, soAgatha All Alongreplicates the opening ofTrue Detective.True Detectiveis another crime drama thatAgatha All Alongpulls heavily from, particularly the surreal stylization that pops up later in the episode. In the credits, they cite that the series is “Based on the Danish seriesWanvaVisdysen,” referencing the hit 2011 crime drama seriesThe Killing, which was an adaptation of the Danish seriesForbrydelsen, which literally translates to “The Crime.”

9Catching Up With Westview Citizens After WandaVision

The opening credits forAgatha of Westviewlist the “cast” as the various citizens of Westview, with most of the cast fromWandaVisionreprising their roles as both figures in Agatha’s fantasy but also their real-life counterparts. The most notable isDebra Jo Rupp as Sharon Davis / “Mrs. Hart,” who is a main cast member inAgatha All Alongand Agatha’s last recruit for her coven.

The audience finds out that Todd Davis / “Mr. Hart,” who was played by Fred Melamed inWandaVision, passed away between the events ofWandaVisionandAgatha All Along.

Other Westview residents include Emma Caulfield as Sarah Proctor / “Dottie Jones” and David Lengel as her husband Harold Proctor/ “Phil Jones,” with the “Dottie” persona being the librarian and “Harold” being the police chief. Meanwhile, their daughter, who was teased inWandaVision, is finally shown. David Payton reprises his role as John Collins / “Herb Feltman” as Agatha’s real-life neighbor and her in fantasy as a fellow detective.

There’s also Asif Ali returns as Abilash Tandon / “Norm Gentilucci,” this time a pawnshop clerk, while Amos Glick returns as a pizza delivery man / “Dennis Webber,” this time playing a mysterious figure who tells Agatha the book she is looking for, “The Darkhold,” burned in a fire, likely a reference to being destroyed by Scarlet Witch inDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

8The Credits Are Filled With Witch References

While the first two episodes ofAgatha All Alongdon’t feature after-credit scenes, the credits are filled with Easter Eggs and references to witches in popular culture, mixed with real-life facts about the witch trials. WithAgatha All Alongbeing a Disney+ series, the end credits get to feature two other Disney properties as the Witch fromSnow White and the Seven Dwarvesappears, as does Lisa Simpson dressed up as a witch in aHalloween episode ofThe Simpsons.

There is also footage ofThe Craft, the 1996 film about a group of teenagers who form their own witch coven. Early on in the credits, an animated Agatha Harkness appears done up in the style of the opening ofBewitched, a series from the 1960s about a witch living with her husband in the suburbs.WandaVisionepisode 2 also featured aBewitchedstyle opening, and the episode itself was modeled after that series.

Scarlett Witch

The variousWizard of Ozreferences in the end credits are the most interesting. A picture from the books of Dorthy whispering to the Cowardly Lion is shown with a toy of the Wicked Witch of the West.

The trailer forAgatha All Alongshows that a future episode of the series will feature Agatha Harkness becoming the Wicked Witch of the West with green skin and a pointy hat.The Wizard of Ozis one of the most famous stories involving a witch, with the timing ofAgatha All Alongairing just a few months beforeWicked, the adaptation of the popular musical, opens in theaters.

Disney previously produced 2013’sOz: The Great and Powerful, aWizard of Ozprequeldirected by Sam Raimi who also directedDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the film that helped kick off the events ofAgatha All Along. The MCU has featured manyWizard of Ozhomages through the Multiverse Saga, andAgatha All Alongcontinues that trend.

7Scarlet Witch and the Witches' Road

While Agatha Harkness herself has not been the lead in any long-running comics, that doesn’t mean the show isn’t pulling from any Marvel Comics lore or storylines. It appears to be drawing from two key comics, James Robinson’sScarlet Witchcomic from 2015 to 2017 and also 2004’sWitchesby writers Bronwyn Carlton and Brian Walsh and Artworrk by Mike Deodato and Will Conrad.

Scarlet Witchintroduced the concept of The Witches' Road, the main location Agatha and her coven are trying to get to in episode 2 and what looks like the primary location of the series. In that comic, Agatha was a spiritual guide for Wanda Maximoff, but here, Agatha Harkness takes center stage.

Witchesexplored a coven of magic users in the Marvel Universe. While the only member of the comic inAgatha All Alongis Jennifer Kale, the comic itself looked to explore a group of female witches in the Marvel Universe and looked to capitalize on the success of series likeBuffy the Vampire SlayerandCharmed. Mixing these two different comics, published years apart and centered on different characters, allows the creators ofAgatha All Alongto craft their own unique story while having a strong framework from which to build.

6Coven of Chaos

In episode two, Agatha recruits a group of witches to form her coven to embark on the Witches' Road. The witches are pulled from across Marvel Comics' vast history, with some newer characters mixed in with those created duringMarvel’s supernatural boom of the 1970s. Much like The Avengers or the Guardians of the Galaxy, these characters come from different corners of the Marvel Universe with unique pasts that will need to unite to be a greater team. They include:

5Iconic Dates on the Library Card

When Agatha discovers the library checkout card, multiple dates are written on it. October 23 later says W. Maximoff, indicating Wanda Maximoff and might suggest that the events ofDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesstook place in October as the official MCU Timeline says the film takes place in the fall of 2025. Then, the next date, January 28th, belongs to Agatha Harkness.

Other key dates include

4Agatha’s Son, Nicolas Scratch, Is Hiding in Plain Sight

In the first episode, while under the Scarlet Witch’s spell, Agatha (under the Agnes persona) looks into the empty children’s room with a plaque that says Nicolas Scratch. This is a send-up of a prestige television series in which a character has a dead child. With a reference in episode 2 to “Teen” being another potential child sacrifice of Agatha’s, it appears that this might be more than a callback to tragic backstories on prestige dramas and an actual one for Agatha Harkness as she seems to have a son that is now missing.

Nicolas Scratch is Agatha Harrkness' son from the comics. Created by writer Len Wein and artist George Pérez, he debuted inFantastic Four#185 in August 1977. He is typically a villain and a threat in the comics to both Agatha Harkness and The Fantastic Four.

Many thought that Agatha’s pet rabbit fromWandaVision, Señor Scratchy, might have been a reference to her son Nicolas Scratch, which could still be the case. While she might have named the rabbit after her son, there is also a chance that the rabbit is her son cursed to be trapped in the body of a rabbit. This theory might hold some weight as the next batch of characters, The Salem Seven, can turn into animals and have a unique connection to Nicolas Scratch, hinting he might be the series' true villain hiding in plain sight, much like how Agatha was forWandaVision.

3Salem Seven

The Salem Seven are teased in episode 1 and shown in episode 2. In the comics, the Salem Seven are the children of Nicolas Scratch, making them the grandchildren of Agatha Harkness. Their status in the series is unknown, but it does appear that they are a group of witches who are specifically targeting Agatha Harkness.Given the name, they might have connections to the witch’s coven in Salem that Agatha killed, as shown inWandaVision.

MCU: Here’s What Makes Wanda (Scarlet Witch) One of the Most Powerful Avengers

Find out how Wanda Maximoff has become one of the most powerful Avengers in the MCU.

In the comics, they have the ability to transform into fantastic creatures with powers, and the animal convention seems to have carried over into the live-action adaptation. Six of the seven members are credited with animal names connected to their mask-like “Snake” (Marina Mazepa), “Crow” (Bethany Curry), “Fox” (Athena Perample), “Rat” (Britta Grant), “Owl” (Alicia Vela-Bailey), and “Coyote” (Chau Naumova). There is also “Vertigo” (Okwui Okpokwasili), who is the only member of the Salem Seven to share a name with a team member from the comics. She can’t transform herself into an animal but instead can attack someone’s sense of balance. In the comics, she is also the oldest daughter of Nicolas Scratch, so that might be a hint that these characters have a familiar tie to Agatha Harkness.

2Mephisto Rumors Return with Blackheart

Anyone who watchedWandaVisionlikely remembers the weekly speculation around if andwhen the character Mephisto would appear. With Mephisto being part of Scarlet Witch’s story in the comics involving her twin children, many fans assumed the character would be pulling the strings of the 2021 Disney+ series.

Mephisto did not appear inWandaVision, although rumors suggest he will appear inIronheart, played by Sasha Baron Cohen. While Mephisto never appeared inWandaVision, he is linked to the series, and it does feel like the writers ofAgatha All Alongare having fun playing with audiences' expectations and calling back to those Mephisto references.

Rio (Aubrey Plaza) references that she has a “black heart,” while later, Lilla says the final name on Agatha’s coven list was not written down but was the symbol of a black heart. Agatha clearly knows this is Rio, but she goes to recruit Mrs. Hart (Debra Jo Rupp); this is a callback to the business dinner that Wanda and Vision had with the Harts in the first episode ofWandaVisionsymbolized by a black and white heart on the calendar.

With so much attention being drawn to Rio having a “black heart,” it cannot help but remind fans of Mephisto’s child in the comics, Blackheart. Blackheart was created by Ann Nocenti and John Romita Jr. and first appeared inDaredevil#270 in September 1989 before becoming the main enemy of Ghost Rider. Wes Bently previously portrayed Blackheart in 2007’sGhost Rider. Is there a chance that Rio is the MCU version of Blackheart? It is, but also, this feels like a fun joke by theAgatha All Alongcreators to have at fans who dug deep into Mephisto with the previous series to make more connections to the character.

1Something Wiccan This Way Come

Ever since Joe Locke was announced to be joining the cast ofWandaVision, fans immediately jumped to the conclusion that he was Billy Kaplan aka Billy Maximoff, better known as Wiccan, who is the son of The Scarlet Witch who audiences saw a younger version of in bothWandaVisionandDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

There are plenty of clues for audiences to take that Locke’s mysterious Teen is Wiccan, specifically in how his name or any personal details about him seem to be censored out by an unknown force whenever he speaks, meaning Agatha (and therefore the audience) can’t learn more about him. When Agatha knocks down his “Welcome Coven” sign, the only letter that stays up is W, a subtle hint at his Wiccan identity. Even the W. Maximoff on the library check-out card might not be a reference to Wanda Maximoff at all but instead, William Maximoff, as William is the proper name for Billy.

Wiccan is a significant part of theYoung Avengers, a storyline Marvel has been building to for some timein projects likeHawkeye,The Marvels, andAnt-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, so the Teen being Wiccan would not be a shock at all.

With Teen showing up in the first episode in Agatha’s house, the very same house where she has a room dedicated to a “dead” son,Agatha All Alongseems to also be teasing that Teen might be Nicolas Scratch, Agatha’s long lost son. Given the dynamic the two establish in episode 2, with her acting as an unwilling mentor and him wanting to get to know her, it would make sense. Although this might be a bit of misdirection, a later revelation that Teen is the son of the woman who cursed Agatha Harkness would put a strain on their relationship while also providing Agatha Harkness a chance to gain a new surrogate son and try to redeem herself for her past actions.

The first two episodes ofAgatha All Alongare now streaming on Disney+, with additional episodes dropping weekly through September and October.
