The Response to ‘G20’ Has Been Mixed, but Does It Really Matter?

The response toG20’s no-nonsense action movie thrills has been decidedly mixed. The thriller currently holds a “rotten” rating of 57% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes alongside a lesser 48% from audiences on the Popcornmeter. “Too straight-faced to have as much fun with its juicy premise as it could,G20is more pedestrian than presidential but does have a commanding lead in Viola Davis,” the critics’ consensus reads.

However, sometimes the response of the masses must be disregarded, andG20is not without its fans.MovieWe’s own Will Sayre, for instance, heaped praise on the efforts of Davis and Starr and declared the movie a “Wildly Entertaining Action Thrill Ride.”

“It takes a hot minute for Davis' action chops to shine, but once the Oscar winner delivers, man, you’ll be shaking in your boots — or slippers, rather, since this is an at-home viewing experience. Starr, meanwhile, loses himself in the frenzied, villainous role of Rutledge, who uses video recordings of the captive global leaders to deep-fake them into “praising” bitcoin.”

Now best recognized for his role as the villainous Supe, Homelander,Antony Starr revealed exclusively to MovieWebhow he approached his newest bad guy, with the actor viewing his terrorist leader as a dark mirror of Viola Davis’ heroic POTUS.

“So I looked at it as the character is very intrinsically linked to Volia’s character they kind of mirror each other. So, whereas she came back and became a hero, the opposite happened to Rutledge. He came back in my backstory, like a lot of soldiers, with PTSD, and that didn’t go well with his family. And a lot of what I chose as a rock is that as a father, there would be nothing worse than having your kids lose touch and start seeing you as a failure, or because with the PTSD, not being able to mend that.

So, in my head she came back and she was made a hero. So a lot of what’s driving him is wanting to be seen as a hero by his own kids, and where she got her family and everything, Rutledge didn’t. And I think having that stuff back pocket for me, a lot of that backstory for me adds to the performance.”
