From the looks of the promotional material released thus far, he is pulling a lot from the horror movies of that decade, especiallyFriday the 13thand other backwoods maniacs. However, the new teaser takes aim at Alfred Hitchcock’s iconicPsychoshower scene from 1960. It should be noted that the sequel to Hitchcock’s original was released in 1983. Whatever the case may be,American Horror Story: 1984looks like a lot of fun.
We were treated to thefirst poster for American Horror Story: 1984earlier this week and it doubled down on the 80s slasher feel. Another teaser finds an innocent victim swinging on a Camp Redwood swing, only to disappear after the mysterious masked villain takes her. The new season is starting to look likeWet Hot American SummermeetsFriday the 13thand that is not a bad thing at all. Ryan Murphy and FX started with a more playful approach to the marketing of season 9 and it has only recently started to grow darker in tone.
Along with the obviousnods to Friday the 13th, fans will more than likely see some hints ofA Nightmare on Elm Streetsince it was released in 1984 and is one of the most iconic horror movies of all time. Elsewhere,American Horror Story: 1984looks a lot like 1983’sSleepaway Camp, so there could be some more than subtle nods to that particular movie too. With that being said, Ryan Murphy and crew do like to pull out a lot of surprises, so all of the obvious slasher elements may not make it into the final version of season 9.
American Horror Story: 1984will feature the return ofEmma Roberts, Billie Lourd, Cody Fern, Leslie Grossman, and John Carroll Lynch. Fans of the hit FX show may be more than a little bummed that Sarah Paulson isn’t involved this time around, but she has an incredibly busy schedule working with Ryan Murphy on two other shows, so it seems likely she will return in the future. Evan Peters is also not taking part in the upcoming season.
American Horror Story: 1984is all set topremiere September 10th on FXand fans are starting to get pretty excited to see where the horror anthology series will go in season 9. It’s entirely possible that Ryan Murphy and crew have been doing something playful with the marketing in order to deliver something completely different. The network and Murphy have been known to throw some pretty major curveballs at viewers over the years while being very secretive about their intentions.
