There has been a big fan theory that just won’t die ever sinceStar Wars: The Force Awakensopened this past December. A lot of people truly believe thatAndy Serkis’Supreme Leader Snokeis actually Darth Plagueis. In a new interview withEW, the actor completely denies that notion, claiming Snoke is ‘just Snoke’. The actor went onto say that this character is a new addition to the ongoing franchise storyline. Though, Snoke is fully aware of events from earlier movies.
What has fans so convinced that Snoke is Darth Plagueis in the first place? For starters, the official Star Wars: The Force Awakens soundtrack album has a track entitled Snoke, which some claim is the same music playing during theStar Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sithscene when Anakin talks to Palpatine aboutDarth Plagueis, and the tragedy that befell him. During this scene, it is revealed that Plagueis can save people from dying. But he could not save himself. This implies that Darth Plagueis was killed by his apprentice. Which turns out to be Palpatine.Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sithsets up the idea that Emperor Palpatine betrayed and killed Plagueis.
In previous interviews,Andy Serkishas stated that Plagueis was not part of the original trilogy, but was around during theClone Wars. And he was completely damaged. Many believe that Palpatine struck Plagueis down with Force Lightening, and Darth Plagueis somehow regenerated or brought himself back to life. Some believe that is why Snoke’s face is so scarred in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and why he didn’t take part in the original trilogy. He was recuperating, waiting for his time to seek revenge. And it’s speculated that this is why he threw away the shackles of the Sith. He didn’t believe in that anymore, as he saw what betrayal looked like first hand. And it was his fear of dying that made him attempt to become immortal.
Youtube User Dash Star lays this all out in the video below. He claims that if you listen to the twoJohn Williamstracks from both movies, there is no way it could be a coincidence. And that this is rock solid proof that Snoke is Plagueis. If this were all true, it would be a major reveal. So, of courseAndy Serkisisn’t going to be entirely truthful about his character’s true identity.
The video goes onto point towards the recent release of theStar WarsVisual Dictionary that arrived along with the sequel last month. In it, it is revealed thatKylo Renuses both the light and the dark side of the force, and that Snoke is interested in that power. This mirrors the relationship between Palpatine and Plagueis, and falls in line with everything that has come before it. About Snoke’s place in the new trilogy,Andy Serkisrevealed this.
“Supreme Leader Snoke is quite an enigmatic character, and strangely vulnerable at the same time as being quite powerful. Obviously he has a huge agenda. He has suffered a lot of damage. As I said, there is a strange vulnerability to him, which belies his true agenda, I suppose.”
Andy Serkissays he sympathizes with fans who want to know more about Snoke, and it’s possible that even he doesn’t know the full story behind his character yet.
