As of now,Captain America: Civil Waris still the movie to beat this year at the worldwide box office, with $1.15 billion. However, Disney Pixar’sFinding Doryhas the biggest domestic total with $478.4 million, well ahead of Cap’s $407.7 million here in the states. Still, thissuperhero adventureis a huge hit, both critically and commercially, kicking off Marvel Phase 3 and introducing new heroes likeBlack Panther(Chadwick Boseman) andSpider-Man(Tom Holland). One of the most memorable moments of the film, though, has to be the introduction of Giant-Man. Today we have a glimpse at this character’s early design with new concept art, which offers some intriguing hints about the early story development.

There had long been rumors that Giant Man would surface at some point during the movie, and he did so during the now-iconic airport fight scene. Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) uses his suit’s special capabilities to help Team Cap turn the tide in the battle against Team Iron Man. Concept artistAndy Parkshared two new pieces of artwork onTwitter, featuringGiant Man, who seems to be running through an airplane while engaged in battle withChris Evans' Captain America, revealing that, at least at some point during the development, Scott Lang was on Team Iron Man.

Ant-Man Captain America Civil War concept art

We don’t know exactly when this artwork was commissioned, but perhaps it was before the studio worked out theAnt-Manpost-credit scene, and how it tied intoCaptain America: Civil War.Anthony Mackie’sThe Falconalso made a special appearance inAnt-Man, engaging in battle with Scott on the rooftop of the Avengers' new facility. During the post-credit scene, Cap and Falcon find The Winter Soldier, whose metallic arm has been locked in a vise, which gives Falcon the idea to bring inAnt-Manto help them out. This leads to a natural transition into Team Cap for Scott, when the main battle gets under way.

While it’s interesting to speculate what might have happened ifAnt-Manjoined Team Iron Man, we wouldn’t have gotten another memorable moment fromCivil War, whereAnt-Mantakes a ride on one of Hawkeye’s (Jeremy Renner) arrows. Having a fast-talking character like Scott Lang, whose introduction to Cap provided plenty of comic relief, join Iron Man may have not paired up so well with another eventual member of Stark’s team. The excitableSpider-Man, whose interactions with these heroes and with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) provided some much needed levity, may have clashed with Scott Lang’s one-liners. Perhaps it’s best that Scott eventually went the way of Team Cap.

As for Giant Man, it’s possible that we’ll see him again in theMarvel Phase 3sequelAnt-Man and the Wasp, which starts shooting early next year and will hit theaters on July 20, 2025. It’s certainly possible that Giant Man may surface once again in this sequel, which will also starEvangeline Lillyas The Wasp andMichael Penaas Luis, but we’ll have to wait and see. In the meantime, take a look at this concept art formCaptain America: Civil War, where Giant Man is seen fighting for the other side.
