It’s official, moviegoers across the world haveBarbiefever. Fans couldn’t get enough of seeing Greta Gerwig’sBarbiein theaters, during its opening weekend. The film succeeded twofold in turnout. First, audience reception garnered Gerwig’s latest venture an “A” CinemaScore along with a 90% Tomatometer rating and audience score, at the time of this writing. Second, there are those hefty box office receipts.Barbiewas predicted to make upwards of $165 million at the global box office, and the film came very close to doing just that.
Barbiebrought in a staggering $337 million worldwide, which includes its three-day opening weekend (Friday-Sunday) and advance screenings held on the Wednesday and Thursday beforehand (perBox Office Mojo). Domestically, Gerwig’s tale of the famous Mattel doll managed to make $155 million in the United States, with foreign numbers coming in at an even more impressive $182 million.

The film’s opening weekend is easily the biggest success of the 2023 summer box office. Domestically,Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Versehad set the summertime bar with its $121-million opening weekend, butBarbieleft the animated Miles Morales adventure eating the dust of her bright pink convertible. AndBarbieeven bestedThe Super Mario Bros. Movie’s$146 million, which had been the best opening weekend in the United States during 2023 until Ken and Barbie decided to visit the real world.

Barbie Wins Over the World
Even opening up against Christopher Nolan’sOppenheimerdidn’t slowBarbie’sroll at the box office. AndOppenheimerdidn’t perform too shabby in its own right. However, Nolan’s historical tale of J. Robert Oppenheimer only managed to make $174 million worldwide ($80.5 million domestically, $93.6 million internationally), but it just couldn’t keep pace with the Mattel doll’s big-screen adaptation.
Barbiealso set a number of records on its way to box office supremacy. According toDeadline, the film made the largest amount of money in advance sales for Warner Bros. ever at $49.5 million.Barbiealso marks the best opening by a female director (domestically). The previous record of $153.4 million was held byCaptain Marvel’sAnna Boden. However,Greta Gerwigdid it alone while Boden shares directing credit on the 2019 MCU film with Ryan Fleck.
Also, Gerwig has outdone herself at the box office. Prior toBarbie, Gerwig’s top domestic debut was achieved by 2019’sLittle Women, which opened with $16.8 million in the U.S. It’s also the biggest box office opening (domestically) for both Margot Robbie (Suicide Squadhad been her best) and Ryan Gosling (Blade Runner 2049had been his best). Lastly,Barbierepresents the biggest opening weekend for a movie based on characters originating as a toy.Transformers: Dark of the Moonpreviously held that record with $115.9 million.
Sound of Freedomtakes the bronze medal at the weekend’s domestic box office with $20.1 million, whileMission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part Onesurprisingly slides all the way from first to fourth during its second weekend of action with $19.5 million.Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destinyrounds out the Top 5 with $6.7 million.
