Marvel’sBlack Pantherset yet another impressive record today, although this record comes from social media, not at the box office. Twitter announced thatBlack Pantherhas more than 35 million tweets and counting, which is enough to surpassStar WarsmoviesThe Force AwakensandThe Last Jedias the most tweeted-about movie of all time. The most tweets about the movie came from the United States, the U.K. and Thailand.
Twitter also broke down some other interesting stats, revealing that the most tweeted-about emojis linked toBlack Panthertweets are the fire emoji, black heart and crown. The three most popular hashtags are #BlackPanther, #WakandaForever and #Wakanda, each of which automatically brings up the Black Panther mask emoji. The three most tweeted-about characters are Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) and Shuri (Letitia Wright). The Killmonger character likely got a big bump after a story went viral about a young girl whobroke her retainerafter watching Killmonger take his shirt off.
Twitter also revealed thatBlack Pantheris atop the most tweeted-about movies of 2018, behindStar Wars: The Last Jediand the upcomingAvengers: Infinity War. With just over a month left untilAvengers: Infinity Warhits theaters, it’s possible thatthis Marvel Phase 3 adventurecould ultimately breakBlack Panther’s record, especially since there will be a number ofBlack Panthercharacters featured inInfinity War, along with a pivotal battle sequence teased in the trailers that takes place in the fictional country of Wakanda.
Thissocial media recordshouldn’t come as much of a surprise, sinceBlack Pantherhas been dominating the cinematic landscape ever since debuting last month. It became the first movie sinceAvatarto win its first five weekends in a row, and with its domestic total at $607.2 million, it will become the highest-grossing superhero movie ever at the domestic box office, passing the $623.3 million mark set byThe Avengersin 2012. It will also passStar Wars: The Last Jedi($619.8 million) andThe Avengersto become the fifth highest-grossing movie ever. Whether it can hold on to outlastJurassic World($652.2 million) in fourth place orTitanic($659.3 million) in third place remains to be seen.
Despite this overwhelming success at the box office, Marvel has still not officially announced aBlack Panthersequel at this time, but there have been talks of multiple spin-offs and sequels that are reportedly in the works. While most box office analysts figuredBlack Pantherwould do well, even in its mid-February frame, which isn’t always conducive to box office success, hardly no one could have predicted the movie would be this big of a smash hit, dominating at the box office through the end of March.
