TheMCUis one of the most popular movie franchises of all time, but that doesn’t mean it is as revered as other, more critically-acclaimed cinema. TheAvengersfranchise has made billions for Marvel Studios, but it’s not often they make the cut of the “Best Of” all-time lists. However, the New York Times just released their Best Movies of the 21st Century list, voted on by select actors and filmmakers, and the highest-rated MCU movie onRotten Tomatoeshas made the cut.

The New York Times has unveiled The 100 Best Movies of the 21st Century, and while superheroes were mostly absent, one beloved MCU title made the list. The three-time Oscar-winning filmBlack Pantherlanded at the #96 spot on the list, sandwiched betweenGravity(#97)andThe Worst Person in the World(#95). Ryan Coogler’sBlack Pantheris one of two superhero movies to be voted in the top 100, while Christopher Nolan’sThe Dark Knightis ranked at #28. Most superhero fans will find it hard to imagine a better combination of superhero films being included in the top 100, so it seems the New York Times and the voters who participated got it right.

James Gunn Reveals the Surprising Franchise That Inspired DCU Reboot (No, It’s Not the MCU)

The DC Universe, which starts with ‘Superman,’ is explicitly not inspired by the MCU.

A notable name not included in the Top 100 isSpider-Man: Into theSpider-Verse, which may surprise many, especially considering how highly lauded the animated franchise is among critics and general audiences. However, it seems animated films in general made very rare appearances on the NYT list, specifically Hayao Miyazaki’sSpirited Awayand Pixar’sUp.Most recent films were entirely absent from the list, besides a select few titles. The NYT voting assembly was made up of major actors and filmmakers, including Pedro Almodóvar, Sofia Coppola, Barry Jenkins and Guillermo del Toro, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mikey Madison, John Turturro and Julianne Moore.

Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther in MCU

Is ‘Black Panther’ Getting Recast?

After the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, Ryan Coogler celebrated his legacy inBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever, while giving the titular mantle to T’Challa’s sister, Shuri (Letitia Wright). However, rumors have swirled that Marvel Studios is looking to change course and introduce another version of T’Challa to the MCU. WhileWakanda Foreverintroduced his son, who carries on his name, it seemsAvengers: DoomsdayandSecret Warsmight be using the multiverse to bring in a newBlack Panther. In fact, there is a popular actor that has been rumored for the role, whose latest movie just hit theaters this week.

Damson Idris (Snowfall) plays a Formula 1 driver inF1,alongside Brad Pitt, in Joseph Kosinski’s heart-pounding racing film. The actor has been a longtime favorite to join the MCU, and the latest speculation points toa possible role as Black Panther. When recently asked about this possibility, he answered quite suspiciously, saying, “Yes. No.” It’s unclear how exactly this could occur, but considering that an alternate universe version of Black Panther was featured in leaked concept art forAvengers: Doomsday, there is a chance that a new actor might be taking on the mantle.
