Some fans are calling for Bruce Campbell to play an older version of Clark Kent in a movie or TV series based onKingdom ComeSuperman, and the B-movie legend himself is on board. On Twitter, a Campbell fan posted an image featuring a side-by-side comparison of the actor and the DC comic book character, and admittedly, the resemblance is uncanny. Responding to the tweet with a photo himself sporting a gray beard, Campbell himself agrees with the potential casting choice by writing one simple phrase: “I’m ready for GeezerSuperman.”
Bruce Campbelldoes have some experience with superhero movies, though not necessarily as a superhero. He made separate cameo appearances as different characters for Sam Raimi’sSpider-Manmovie trilogy, which saw him playing a wrestling promoter, a snooty usher, and a French Maître d'. Because some unused storyboards for Raimi’s cancelledSpider-Man 4sequel showMysterio looking like Bruce Campbell, it’s also been rumored the actor would have played the supervillain in the movie. In any case, the legendary actor is long overdue to lead his own superhero movie, and a Kingdom Come Superman movie seems like a perfect fit for him.
Created by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, theKingdom Comecomic book debuted in 1996. Set in an alternate timeline, it followsKal-Elstepping down as Superman following the death of Lois Lane, returning years later as a more hardened version of the Man of Steel. The alternate version of the character is also well-known for his unique look as an older take on Superman, which just so happens to look a lot like Campbell. Brandon Routh, who played Superman inSuperman Returns, will be playing the Arrowverse version ofKingdom ComeSuperman in the upcoming TV crossover eventCrisis on Infinite Earths.
Campbell is very well-known for his work in the horror genre, which notable includes his run asAshley J. Williamsfrom theEvil Deadmovie trilogy from director Sam Raimi. More recently, Campbell reprised the role for the Starz TV seriesAsh vs. Evil Dead, which served as a direct follow-up to the original movies. After the series came to an end, Campbell retired from playing the Ash character in live-action projects, though he did reprise the role in voice only for the video gameDead by Daylight. On the live-action front, Campbell has since moved on to other shows like AMC’sLodge 49and currently hosts The Travel Channel’sRipley’s Believe It or Not!reboot series.
Bruce Campbell as Kingdom Come Superman - or “Geezer Superman,” if you will - is the superhero movie I didn’t know I needed, and now that the idea has been presented, I can’t stop thinking about it. Other actors like Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill have all done a fine job with their own interpretations of the Man of Steel, but the time has come to add Bruce Campbell to that list of names.
