Prime Video’sCanary Blackstars Kate Beckinsale as Avery Graves, a CIA agent who must use all her skill to rescue her husband from the clutches of a terrorist organization before they unleash the Canary Black virus on the world. The movie, directed by Pierre Morel, who also directed the Liam Neeson vehicleTaken, is an action thriller that has a fairly predictable plot. Still, with Beckinsale’s committed performance and Ray Stevenson in one of his last roles as Avery’s mentor and CIA Director Jarvis Hedlund, it’s still worth catching.
But what exactly happens to Avery’s husband? And did the Canary Black virus get sent out around the world? Let’s take a look!
What Happens in Canary Black?

An introduction shows Avery Graves’s bona fides as she goes after a top-secret file with information on an assassin named Kali in Tokyo, Japan, and takes out quite a few men to do it. Back in Croatia, where Avery lives, we are introduced to Avery’s husband, David Brooks (Rupert Friend), who knows nothing about herlife as a spy. The pair, however, are very much in love and have a blissful marriage.
One day, after going to the secret CIA office where she works and turning over the file she recovered in Tokyo,Avery returns home to find her husband has been kidnapped. She is quickly contacted by the organization that took him and tasked with recovering a file called Canary Black from one of the CIA’s Black Sites. She initially tries to ambush the kidnappers by having a hacker she knows, Sorina (Romina Tonkovic), trace their number, but they’ve already cleared out. So she goes to the Black Site and asks to see Laszlo Stoica, the man who the organization says has the Canary Black file in his tooth. However, when Avery takes the tooth out, there is no file.
Avery goes to her safe house for some money but finds an assassin there waiting for her, whom she dispatches. At the same time, Hedlund finds out from the Deputy Director of the CIA, Nathan Evans (Ben Miles), what the Canary Black file is:A list of blackmail material for everyone in the United States government. Avery, looking for help, then meets with Hedlund, who betrays her to the CIA. However, as they’re taking her back with them, their cars are attacked by the terrorists who kidnapped Avery’s husband, and she manages to get free.
She learns that she can get the Canary Black file from a secure CIA server, and asks Hedlund for the nearest location. After he gets it to her, she goes there and just barely gets the file. Avery then realizes it’s notsimply a blackmaillist buta virus capable of infecting all the world’s computers country by country, disrupting everything including stock markets, governments, and more. Avery hotfoots it to the phone where she’s expected to make the drop by the terrorists. There, she’s drugged and brought to the organization, asCanary Blackenters its third act.

What Happens at the End of Canary Black?
The head of the organization is revealed to be Breznov (Goran Kostic), the director of the National Security Service in Croatia. He disrupts the Global Unification Summit via his computer, where he threatens every country there with the use of the Canary Black virus unless they all give him 1% of their GDP. He even uses Singapore as a case study, releasing the virus on it. Meanwhile, Hedlund manages to track down the terrorist organization and is killed for his trouble by Breznov.

As Avery is tortured at the terrorists' hideout, David is brought in, but he surprises her with his skills. Even though Breznov shoots him in the torso, David manages to knock out his underlings and free Avery.Avery realizes that David isthe assassin Kali. She learns that after botching a job for the Russian mob, he had a $20 million debt placed on himand revealed his identity to Breznov. Kali told Breznov about Canary Black because it was the only leverage he had. However,he swears their marriage was real. Avery isn’t interested in listening to him. She escapes the room where she was held and goes after Breznov.
She chases Breznov and his crony, who is responsible for unleashing the virus, shooting the crony in the leg. Avery and Breznov engage in a knockdown, drag-out fight, that ends when Avery sticks a knife through Breznov’s neck, killing him. But her work isn’t done because she soon realizes his crony has uploaded the files from Canary Black. As the upload feature on his computer counts up, Avery runs to the computer and disconnects it from the server just in time.
What Happens with Avery and Kali?
After Avery kills Breznov and stops the virus, Kali comes in and tells her they still have each other, but she’s not so sure. She gives him back his rings and tells her they don’t get a happily ever after, just as a CIA contingent comes in. Kali tells her he loves her before throwing himself out the window into the canal below. They arrest Avery.
Later, Evans is interrogating her at a CIA Black Site but he doesn’t get far when he’s interrupted by Elizabeth Mills (Saffron Burrows).Mills offers Avery a job in MC6, a new agency tasked with handling the most critical missions beyond the capabilities of the other agencies. Of course, Avery accepts. As she walks away from the Black Site,she notices her husband’s ring on the ground. She picks it up and pockets it. Could this mean that the movie is getting a sequel and Avery and Kali will square off again?Stream on Prime Video.
