Like most ofMarvel’s stars,Chris Evanssigned a long-term deal with the studio, locking him in for six movies, but that deal is about to end, sinceCaptain America: Civil Warmarks his fifth project under that pact. While promoting his directorial debutBefore We Go, which hits theaters today,Chris Evansrevealed the prospect of hisMarveldeal expiring is “terrifying.” And he’ll stick around as long as Marvel wants him. Here’s what the actor had to say toET Online.
“It always feels so good to kind of wrap and just say, ‘Alright, one more down.’ But it’s also kind of like high school in a sense. You keep looking to when you’re going to be done, and we’re almost done now, and you’re not quite ready for it to be over. It’s almost terrifying to think about these being done.”
With just one movie left in his contract, some fans are wondering if he will only appear in just one installment of the two-part sequelAvengers: Infinity War Part IandAvengers: Infinity War - Part II, set for release in 2018 and 2019, respectively. In another interview withCollider, he confirmed that he will appear in both of those movies, and even addressed the possibility of extending his deal with the studio. Here’s what he had to say below.
“Listen, ifMarvelwants me they got me. I’ve never had such a relationship where you have such-I mean look at my resume, I’m used to being on set being like, ‘Ah is this movie gonna be terrible?‘Marveljust can’t stop making great movies, they do it in their sleep. It’s wonderful directors and producers and actors and scripts, and it’s like a playground as an actor.”
It’s well-known that the actor almost turned down the role of Steve Rogers in 2011’sCaptain America: The First Avenger. Four years and five years later, the role has propelled his career in a big way, even allowing him to make hisdirectorial debutwithBefore We Go. While looking back on his reluctance to take on this role of a lifetime,Chris Evanshad this to say.
“It’s so mind-boggling that I was so tentative in the beginning to jump onboard. What an asshole I would be if I hadn’t done this. I mean can you imagine? Kicking myself-I’d never forgive myself!”
The actor has also said in the past that he plans on focusing his career on directing after hisMarvelcontract expires. He had initially talked about “retiring” from acting altogether, but it doesn’t seem that will happen anymore. When asked about balancing acting and directing afterMarvel, the actor/director had this to say.
“I love acting and I’ll always love acting. It’s my first love. But I really enjoy [directing]. I’m kind of excited to take the knowledge I acquired during this process and apply it to the next one.”
