Since its debut onNetflixon Dec. 13,Carry-Onhas managed to take the streaming platform by storm, and rightfully so. It’s a high-octane thriller that hearkens back to action films of old to deliver a tense two hours that makes it hard to look away. Of course, with the movie taking place on Christmas Eve, the debateover whetherCarry-Onis considered a holidaymovie has piqued the interest of viewers on social media, who have their own thoughts on the matter. Now,one of the film’s stars has weighed in on what she thinks of its status.

Speaking withVariety,Carry-On’sSofia Carson spoke at length about the Netflix hit, including whether she considers it a Christmas movie. Her answer once more brought the 1988 action classicDie Hardto the forefront, which has also been the subject of contention over the years when it comes to its Christmas movie status.

Taron Egerton in Carry-On.

“It’s whatever you want it to be for yourself. And I think [co-star] Danielle [Deadwyler] said something so brilliant. She said, ‘This is a Christmaction movie.’ And that’s what I’m going to say from now on. But I do think Die Hard is such a beloved Christmas film for a huge population, and I think that Christmas films can have different genres. One of them is action, and this is an action Christmas film.”

We Did Not See That ‘Carry On’ Plot Twist Coming, But It Was So Good

While there were plenty of clues scattered throughout Netflix’s ‘Carry-On,’ the final reveal was definitely a satisfying surprise.

Carson takes on the role of Nora Parisi inCarry-On, the pregnant girlfriend of Taron Egerton’s Ethan Kopek. The film has managed to be a big hit with critics, earning a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes of 86%, though its audience score sits much lower at 58%. Still, the movie has beenat the top of the Netflix chartsfor the better part of a week now, proving that audiences are still discovering – and loving – the Jaume Collet-Serra production.

Sofia Carson Believes ‘Carry-On’ Combines the Best of Both Worlds

LikeDie Hardbefore it,Carry-Onis set against the backdrop of Christmas Eve, but the holiday isn’t the focal point here. Other than the decorations and the long lines at the airport, the film is a straight-up action thriller about a TSA officer who is blackmailed into letting a nerve agent onboard a flight. Doesn’t sound very cherry, does it?

However, there’s something about the movie that lends itself to the Christmas spirit, combining both the action and holiday genres to deliver something with a little heart underneath its thrills. For Carson, she believes that the two work well together because they’re universally loved by almost everyone, and when mixed together they unite us all.

“I actually think it brings together two really beloved and two really universal genres. Action movies, travel, the entire universe. It doesn’t matter what language you speak, what culture, what country you live in. Everyone loves an action thriller and everyone loves a holiday film because it’s just warm and comforting and brings us all together. So I think in bringing both of those genres together, you’re in essence bringing the world together.”

There’s no official word yeton whetherCarry-Onwill get a sequel, but given its overwhelming success, we wouldn’t be surprised to see another one pop up next holiday season. In the meantime, be sure to check it out on Netflix, and catch our interview with Carson above, where she discusses what it was like appearing in her first big action flick.
