David Fincherhas wrapped filming on his next project,The Killer. The news was confirmed by Dwayne Barr, a member of the film’s camera department, through a picture he shared on Instagram. Apparently, Barr was given a clapper board from the film’s sets, a one signed by the film’s lead actors, Micahel Fassbender and Tilda Swinton. Barr, acknowledging the gift and showing gratitude to cinematographer, Erik Messerschmidt, wrote:
And so it ends….We wrapped David Fincher’s “The Killer” last night. Thank you @emesserschmidt for the wrap gift. Too tired to express everything I desire to share. Kudos to Michael Fassbender and Tilda Swinton.
The clapper board also featured a graphic image of the protagonist as featured in the original novel’s cover, written by Matz and created by artist Luc Jacamon.
David Fincher’sThe Killer: What It’s About?
Earlier, Scott Stuber, head of original films, Netflix, in aninterview withVariety, said about the film:
The Killer is based on a graphic novel, and it is about someone who is a contract killer and the methodology of that world and what he does, which David does detail better than anyone. He’s so good in the detail of method, of watching something unfold. Seeing that early stages of what he does, and something goes awry which then affects him personal. It’s a really fun, big movie in the hands of one of the best filmmakers, and someone we’re really lucky to have a relationship with.
The film is David’s sixth collaboration with Netflix. The director has earlier worked with the platform on the seriesHouse of Cardsand thenMindhunter. Fincher has previously cited the immense creative freedom Netflix offers for his continuous collaborations with the platform. He has also acted as a creator and executive producer on theanimated sci-fi anthology,Love, Death+ Robots, as well as the documentary,Voir.
Fincher is alsoreuniting with his Se7enscreenwriter, Andrew Kevin Walker, and Messerschmidt, who was the cinematographer on Fincher’sMank, gaffer on hisGone Girl,and as a cinematographer for sixteen episodes ofMindhunter. Fincher’s wife, Céan Chaffin, who has been a producing partner and a solo producer on all of David Fincher’s films since 1997’sThe Game andhis seriesMindhunterwill once again helm production duties forThe Killer. For her work on Fincher’s films, Chaffin has been thrice nominated (along with her producing partners) for an Academy Award for Best Picture for -The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008),The Social Network (2010), andMank (2020).
WithThe Killer, David Fincher would be adding another feature to his list of collaborations with Netflix. Speaking of Fincher’s talent, Stuber had added:
Opportunistically you see what David has done with talent throughout his career, and how he constantly elevates people to do their best work. The combination of those two we’re really excited about. It’s David working with Andrew Kevin Walker again for the first time in a long time [since ‘Seven’]. It’s a really provocative and interesting movie. He’s just in the midst of shooting it right now.
The exact details of the plot are currently under wraps and so are the details on the rest of the cast members. The film will probably see a release somewhere around early 2023, under Fincher’s exclusive contract with Netflix, wherein the film will see a limited theatrical release before moving on to streaming.
