The eight-episode live-actionDC Universeseries,Lanterns,has officially been picked up and will be featured as an HBO Original, rather than appearing on the streaming service Max. Chris Mundy will be running the GL’s small-screen show, and Tom King, as well asDamon Lindelofwill serve as executive producers and co-writers on the superhero project. The Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, Casey Bloys, said (perVariety):
“We are elated to be reuniting with bothChris MundyandDamon Lindelofas they partner with Tom for this fresh take onDC’s Green Lantern.As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe,this first new live action series will mark an exciting new era.”
Why Green Lantern Deserves to Be a Major Focus in Gunn’s DCU
James Gunn appears to have many Green Lantern characters set up in his DCU plans, which is why it could be a major factor in the series' future.
Mundy is known for his prolific contributions toCriminal Minds, Ozark, Cold CaseandTrue Detective. Meanwhile, Lindelof is the co-creator of the television seriesLost,in addition to his writing and producing credits onStar Trek(2009),Star Trek Into Darkness,The Leftoversand the HBOWatchmenseries.
Lastly, King is a well-known comic book writer whose contributions toBatman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Mister Miracleand many more, including, of course,Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrowmake him an invaluable member onLanternsand in the DCU.
Lanterns Is ‘Original Detective Story’ Featuring Hal Jordan & John Stewart
13 years have passed sinceRyan Reynolds’ disastrousGreen Lantern(2011)debuted in movie theaters. But Earth’s Emerald protectors are receiving a serious upgrade, courtesy of HBO. And as promised in his DCU announcement back in January of 2023, the live-action series will feature two beloved GLs: Hal Jordan and John Stewart. The Chairmen and CEOs of DC Studios, James Gunn and Peter Safran, reacted to the news ofLanternsofficially being picked up as an HBO Original in a joint statement, via the same source:
“We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBOwith Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm.John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters,and Lanterns brings them to life inan original detective storythat is afoundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman.”

Before Nathan Fillion was cast to suit up as Guy Gardner in Superman, Finn Wittrock was slated to portray the GL on an HBO Max series.

Guy Gardner followed nearly 10 years later inGreen LanternNo. 59 (1968), while John Stewart made his comic book debut inGreen LanternNo. 87 (1971/1972).
