I think we can all agree, that while we may love Chris Hemsworth as Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, his solo adventures have left a little something to be desired. That being said,Thor: Ragnarokis shaping up to be something very interesting, and potentially special. Things just got even more interesting, as Marvel Studios has tapped Devo co-founderMark Mothersbaughto compose the original score forThor’s third solo outing.
Entertainment Weeklyconfirmed the news thatMothersbaughwill be joining the project, which was originally reported by The Wrap. The studio has yet to make the announcement official. Many may feel that he is a peculiar choice to put together the music forThor: Ragnarok, butMothersbaughhas actually had a very impressive career outside of writing 80s hits like “Whip It” and “Uncontrollable Urge.” He has nearly 200 composing credits to his name, dating back to the late 1980s. Just a few of his notable credits include both21and22 Jump Street,The LEGO Movie, severalWes Andersonmovies and interestingly, every single episode ofRugrats, as well as all of the movies.
It is pretty clear thatMarvel Studiosis going all-out onThor: Ragnarok. While the first two movies did well enough at the box office, neitherThororThor:The Dark Worldare generally considered to be among the best works in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.Kevin Feigeis really pulling out all of the stops for this third installment, and seems to be taking a very different approach. The addition ofWhat We Do in the ShadowsdirectorTaika Waititiwas a big sign that we should expect something very unique fromRagnarok. The addition ofMothersbaughand his very distinctive style is another big indicator. Not only that butChris Hemsworthis going to be joined byMark Ruffalo, who will be reprising his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk for the movie, which is undoubtedly very exciting for fans.
The cast joiningHemsworthandRuffaloin thisnew Thor adventure, which will finally be adapting the fan favoritePlanet Hulkstoryline, is absolutely stacked with new talent, along with a couple of welcome, familiar faces.Tom Hiddlestonwill be returning for one last go as Loki, andAnthony Hopkinswill be back as Odin. The exciting new additions includedCate Blanchett, who will be playing the primary villain as Hela,Jeff Goldblumwho is playing the role of Grandmaster,Karl Urbanplaying the villainous Skurge, and Creed starTessa Thompson, who is playing Valkyrie. It was also recently confirmed that the Warriors Three will be returning, butNatalie Portman, who played Jane Foster in the first twoThormovies, will not be back.
Mark Mothersbaughwill be joining the likes ofMichael Giacchino,Brian TylerandAlan Silvestriwho have all scored other movies in the MCU. Granted, his sensibilities are very different and we may very likely be hearing a lot more synthesizers, which could be pretty cool. It will definitely match the aesthetic of the logo for the movie, should that be the case.Thor 3is set for release on July 13, 2025.
