Dexterfans have a lot to be thankful for these days, what with the premiere ofDexter: Original Sin, and the news ofDexter: Resurrectionpremiering in June 2025. After a nearly three-year absence, suddenly our favorite vigilante serial killer is everywhere, and – as it turns out –we have the hit TV seriesYellowstoneto thank forOriginal Sin, which wasn’t the direction creator Clyde Phillips was initially looking to take things.

Speaking withEntertainment Weeklyabout the prequel series, Phillips mentioned that following the events inDexter: New Blood, he assumed that was it for the character,as he was left for dead, bleeding out in the snow after being shot by his son, Harrison. However, after the finale became the most-watched episode in the history of the Showtime network, execs immediately pushed for yet another sequel. Phillips went on to write all 10 episodesbefore a drastic shift was made thanks toYellowstoneand its two prequels.

“We wrote all 10 episodes of the sequel, and then Chris McCarthy from MTV Entertainment and Paramount came on board and said, ‘I’m not in the sequel business, I’m in the prequel business.’ Because he had doneYellowstone[prequels]1883and1923. So Chris said, ‘Can you come up with a prequel in two weeks?'”

‘Dexter: Original Sin’ is off to a great start, and though things will continue next year with ‘Dexter: Resurrection,’ that wasn’t always the plan.

As such, Phillips rushed to come up with an ideaand churned outDexter: Original Sinas quickly as he couldto appease those with the purse strings. The prequel is set 15 years before the events in the original series, and follows a young Dexter Morgan as he navigates life after college as an intern at Miami Metro, all while doing his best to hide his Dark Passenger from everyone but his father.

Original Sinwas then given the green light and put on the fast track to the point where Phillips said he only managed to finish things a couple of weeks ago.“I’m still editing, actually,“he told EW. Thus far, the results have been spectacular, as even though the series has only aired one episode, it’s being heralded by many as a throwback to the original that manages to capture the same magic that made us fall in love with Dexter in the first place.
