Rian Johnsonis gearing up for the limited release ofGlass Onion: A Knives Out Mysteryin theaters before it heads to its streaming release on Netflix in December. This time, southern detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) will make his way to Greece to solve yet another mystery, though Johnson promises this film will be different than the last.
The cast ofGlass Onionrecently sat down withEntertainment Weekly, where they discussed the upcoming whodunit. Johnson shared what he believes makes the murder mystery genre great and why he wants to avoid establishing Blanc as the main character. “It’s a mistake of the genre to think that your detective is your main character,” Johnson explains. “Benoit Blanc is the constant North Star of all of these movies. But you have to think of him as the detective, not the central character. The story has to function in terms of the suspects, the murder, and the victim.” The filmmaker continues, “Benoit is weaving his way through that, but the dramatic stakes are never his.”
This is the same approach he took in 2019 withKnives Out, as Ana de Armas served as the lead in the film. The dramatic stakes had everything to do with her life, as she fought with the Drysdale and Thrombey family while the mystery slowly unraveled. Fans should expect something similar inGlass Onion, although a potential lead is anyone’s guess.

WhenKnives Out wasreleased in 2019, it was an instant success, earning over $300 million at the box office. Netflix would reach a deal with Johnson to secure the rights for two sequels, though the pair agreed upon a limited release in theaters for one week before the eventual streaming premiere.
Glass Onionwill likely be a hit with audiences based onearly reviews, meaning it is full steam ahead for the third film in the growing franchise. However, the filmmaker tells EW he wants to ensure each iteration is different enough that it scares Daniel Craig and himself. They want to continue to take risks, which is what he’s done with the upcoming movie.
“If Daniel and I are going to keep making these, we don’t want to just spin our wheels. We want to be as jazzed and excited and terrified whether or not it’s going to work every single time.”
