Several vibrant, psychedelic new posters forDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnessput the spotlight on a trio of Doctor Strange variants. Released byRedwolf, the kaleidoscopic nature of the artwork offers our latest look at theMCU’salready established Doctor Strange alongside both Strange Supreme (also known as evil Doctor Strange) and the pony-tailed Defender Strange, whose role in the plot is still largely unknown.
Much like the recent multiversal madness of the record-breakingSpider-Man: No Way Home, it’s looking more and more like the upcomingDoctor Strangesequel will see The Master of the Mystic Arts come face-to-face with alternate versions of himself. Of course, unlike the latestSpider-Manadventure, Doctor Strange does not have the same cinematic legacy as the beloved wall-crawler, and thus every variant of the good doctor will be portrayed byBenedict Cumberbatch. Something which should give the vastly talented thespian ample opportunity to stretch his acting muscles as he ranges from good to great and then to evil with each beard change.

The first of the two variants, Strange Supreme, was introduced in the animated seriesWhat If…?, and finds Stephen Strange turning to magic and mysticism after losing his girlfriend Christine Palmer to a car crash. While he begins with heroic intentions, he soon turns to the Dark Dimension in hopes of finding a way to resurrect her, absorbing all manner of terrifying interdimensional beasts.
Defender Strange, meanwhile, has not yet been introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but we can turn to the comics for clues. Thanks to the name, it’s safe to assume that Defender Strange will be a member of the superhero team, The Defenders, a line-up that has consisted of several familiar faces alongside Strange, including Hulk, Namor, The Silver Surfer, and Valkyrie. The role of Defender Strange is mainly unknown, but our Strange and the Defender may team up to take down Strange Supreme. Or, couldDoctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madnesssurprise, uniting all three versions of Strange against another enemy. The Scarlet Witch, perhaps?
