While casting rumors for DC’s upcomingBatgirlmovie have been flying these last few weeks, there has been precious little talk about who will take over directing duties for the flick. At one pointThe AvengersandAvengers: Age of Ultronwriter-director Joss Whedon was up for the job, but then he dropped out for one reason or another depending on who you ask. And today we have word that - as strange as it sounds -Neon DemonandDrivedirectorNicolas Winding Refnwants his chance to helm the Barbara Gordon motion picture.

“Regarding everything else, no I mean, projects that have come to me or been approached about, I’ve always decided not to do them in the end. I love Hollywood. I love glamour and glitz. I love camp. I love vanity, I love egos, I indulge in all that, but the bigger kind of approaches or the offers that have come my way or the interest, in the end, I’ve always just felt that I wasn’t the right person in the end for it. Doesn’t mean that it won’t happen. I mean I would love to do one of those comic book (movies), I mean, me and Batgirl it’s like, we coexist,” theToo Old To Die YoungandOnly God Forgivesfilmmaker recently admitted.

He continues on to say:

“It’s just like a lot of people are obsessed with the idea of this is it or this is it. If it comes and it’s the right, andI can do my version of it, or I can be part of a contribution to that, great. But if it’s not, I’ll just go make something else.”

And if all of this wasn’t enough, right at the very end of the interview, Refn quickly threw out there:

“I know who’s going to play [Batgirl].”

Obviously, the eccentric filmmaker didn’t spill the beans on camera, which is too bad. That said, names that have been floated around regarding the titular crimefighter include such names asKick-AssandDark Shadowsactress Chloe Grace Moretz andStar Wars: The Force AwakensandStar Wars: The Last Jedistar Daisy Ridley. My money is on Ridley.

Anyhow, while it’s been rumored that Warner Bros. is looking for a female director to take the helm of this plannedBatgirlmovie, you never know. Maybe the powers that be behind the scenes will get super brave out of nowhere and hand over the keys to the flick to the guy who helmed a motion picture in whichsupermodels literally eat each other. Stranger things have happened after all. I guess we’ll see one of these days.

Meanwhile, we do know that theBatgirlmovie is currently being written byBumblebeeandBirds of Preyscreenwriter Cathy Yan. For those of you that might not know,Birds of PreyorBirds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn)will star Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary, and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Huntress.
