Star Warsfans rejoiced over the summer when it was finally, officially announced that Ewan McGregor was set to reprise his role asObi-Wan Kenobion a new Disney+ TV show. For years, fans have expressed a desire to see the actor reprise his role as the famed Jedi and, for years, McGregor has been asked about it. During that time, he always had to give some version of the same response. As it turns out, for the last four years, he’s been forced to flat-out lie about it.
Ewan McGregoris currently on something of a hot streak. He’s about to appear inDoctor Sleep, the sequel toThe Shining, and is set to star as Black Mask inBirds of Preynext year. During a recent interview for a large profile on him, McGregor was asked about the new Obi-Wan series. McGregor expressed relief, revealing that he’s known for years, but just couldn’t say anything.
“It’s a f****** massive relief. Because for four years, I’ve been having to lie to people about it.”
We’ve heard rumors upon rumors about just such a project, virtually ever sinceDisneypurchased Lucasfilm, which led to this new era ofStar Warscontent. Originally, we heard it was going to be a movie and last year, it looked to be a very real possibility that was finally happening. Unfortunately, given the lackluster response toSoloat the box office, Disney and Lucasfilm were forced to rethink their strategy with the standalone movies.
So, behind the scenes, they hatched a plan to bring this series to the small screen. As for what we can expect? At this point, the 48-year-old actor, who played the role inGeorge Lucas' prequel trilogy, can’t say much. He did offer a little bit of what to expect from the story and what he’s going to bring to the character this time around.
The storyline sits between Episode III and Episode IV. [Last time,] the Jedi Order was falling apart. It will be interesting to take a character we know in a way and show him, well, his arc will be quite interesting, I think. Dealing with that the fact that all the Jedi were slaughtered with the end of Episode III. It’s quite something to get over… I want to get closer and closer to how Obi-Wan felt while Alec Guinness was playing him. I feel like I’m grayer and nearer him in age, so it’ll be easier to do that."
Deborah Chow(The Mandalorian,Better Call Saul) has been tapped to direct the series. It’s not yet been made clear when, precisely, the show ill go into production, nor has Lucasfilm revealed a release window. We do know that it will take place eight years after the events ofRevenge of the Sith, which opens up all sorts of interesting possibilities.
