As a part ofEntertainment Weekly’s extensiveComic-Conpreview,Fantastic FourdirectorJosh Trankhas offered new details about his upcomingsuperhero moviereboot.Marvel’s first family is much younger in this version, withMiles Tellerportraying Mr. Fantastic,Michael B. Jordanas The Human Torch,Kate Maraas The Invisible Woman andJamie Bellas The Thing. The director burst onto the scene with 2012’sChronicle, and he reveals that, while his first movie explored a group of youngsters discovering their powers,Fantastic Fourtakes a very different approach.
“Chroniclewas all about the discovery and evolution of those powers. This is like, ‘What if it’s a couple years later and it sucks?'”
The director also teased theFantastic Four’s battle with the nefariousDoctor Doom, portrayed byToby Kebbell, going onto tease the enormous scope of this next Marvel adventure.
“The audience should expect an epic, massive, huge, multipower slugfest. This movie is big. A lot of stakes.”
Before this reboot took shape, these superheroes were portrayed byIoan Gruffudd,Jessica Alba,Chris EvansandMichael Chiklisin the 2005 adaptationFantastic Fourand the 2007 sequelFantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. While moderately successful, those movies weren’t received well by fans, which producer/writerSimon Kinbergsays fuels skepticism for this reboot, admitting it’s a tough franchise to take on.
“I get the skepticism going into it because the previous movies weren’t very good. It’s a very hard title to crack.”
It isn’t known yet if the reboot will be featured during 20th Century Fox’sComic-Conpanel, since the studio hasn’t revealed which movies it will present inHall Hon Saturday, July 11. Since it hits theaters on August 7, it’s probably a good bet that the movie will have some sort of presence at the Con, but we’ll have to wait until next week to find out for sure.
