With production scheduled to begin this spring onFast & Furious 8, this highly-anticipated sequel is expected to be yet another international affair. While the bulk of filming will take place in New York City and Atlanta, we reported earlier this month that this sequel is eyeing locations inCubafor part of its shoot, which would make it the first major motion picture to shoot there in over 50 years. Today,Visiris reporting that the production is also gearing up for a shoot in Iceland. The news was confirmed byRegína Ásvaldsdóttir, mayor of Akranes, Iceland, which is, approximately 28 miles north of Reykjavík, who stating that shooting is expected to begin in April.
This report also claims that theFast 8crew plans on pulling off the biggest explosion ever seen in Iceland, although no specific story details were given. The production plans on shooting near the Akranes harbor and in a location known as the Cement Fields. While this project is certainly the biggest ever to shoot in the town, Akranes recently played host to theNetflixseriesSense8. The series used the town’s hospital for part of the production.
Our report onFast & Furious 8’s Cuba shoot from earlier this month revealed that thesequelwas eyeing locations in Iceland and Russia, but neither the Cuban or Russian shoots have been confirmed at this time. After theFast & Furiousfranchise started in Los Angeles with 2001’sThe Fast and the Furious, the beloved film series quickly became an international affair, with its sequels set in Miami, Tokyo, Panama, Rio de Janeiro and London. No plot details have surfaced yet, butVin Dieselteased last year thatKurt Russell’sFurious 7character Mr. Nobody will play a key role in the sequel, which would start a new trilogy. This follow-up will also bring aboard a new director, withStraight Outta ComptondirectorF. Gary Graytaking the helm.
Rumors have also surfaced that2 Fast 2 FuriousstarEva Mendeswill return as Customs Agent Monica Fuentes. After starring in2 Fast 2 Furious,Eva Mendesalso appeared in a mid-credits sequence of 2011’sFast Five. She makes contact withDwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs, and tells him thatMichelle Rodriguez' Leti is actually alive and well, working for the villainous Owen Shaw (Luke Evans), which helps set up 2013’sFast & Furious 6.
With production starting up very soon, it still hasn’t been confirmed who wrote the script forFast & Furious 8yet.Chris Morganhas written the last five movies, but he is now in charge of shepherding Universal’s shared monster universe withAlex Kurtzman.Dwayne JohnsonandJason Stathamhave also confirmed that they’ll be back as Hobbs and Ian Shaw, alongsideVin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto, withMichelle Rodriguez,Jordana Brewster,Tyrese Gibson, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges,Elsa PatakyandLucas Blackexpected to return as well.
