DuringThe Flash’sComic-Conpanel last month, the show’s producers confirmed that the main villain inSeason 2will be Zoom, who is said to be faster than both Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Reverse Flash (Tom Cavanagh). Today,Varietyreports that the villainous Zoom character will be voiced byTony Todd. Much like last season’s Reverse Flash mystery, part ofSeason 2’s story line is exploring who is actually in the Zoom suit. Here’s what executive producerAndrew Kreisberghad to say about bringing inTony Toddto provide Zoom’s voice.

“Last year, with theReverse-Flash, we just modulatedTom Cavanagh’s voice, and this year we wanted to do something a little bit different. Part of the mystery of the season is who or what is underneath the Zoom outfit, and so we wanted to do something likeJames Earl JonesasDarth Vader- this iconic voice coming out of this mask. Last year, we thought of the Reverse-Flash as a speed warrior; this year, Zoom is like a speed demon, and no one does demon-voice better thanTony Todd.”

Zoom will make his debut in the second episode ofThe Flash Season 2, entitledFlash of Two Worlds, airing Tuesday, October 13 on The CW. This is the first we’ve heard of the second episode’s title, an homage to an iconic comic book that featured both Barry Allen andJay Garrick, the first character from the comics to becomeThe Flash. Since theFlash of Two Worldscomic book cover was re-created in a recent poster, featuring bothGrant GustinandTeddy Sears, it seems likely this episode will be the first time we see Jay Garrick. When asked about Zoom’s suit,Andrew Kreisbergcompared it to Venom from the Spider-Man comics.

“The Zoom outfit is much more organic than the Reverse-Flash suit. In a way, it’s hard to tell if it is a suit or alive. There’s no skin showing, for all you know there’s a robot underneath, or dark energy.”

InThe Flash Season 1, fans discovered quite early that Harrison Wells was in fact Reverse-Flash, but this year, the mystery will last much longer, comparing it to a horror movie’s final reveal of the true killer. While fans won’t learn Zoom’s true identity right away, the villain’s motivation for his evil ways will be quite similar to Reverse-Flash. Here’s whatAndrew Kreisberghad to say.

“For us, the best villains are the ones who don’t have megalomaniacal ‘I want to rule the world’ motivations. Last year, the Reverse-Flash had a very simple goal which was ‘I just want to go home, and if people need to die or cities need to get wasted for me to get that, so be it.’ And Zoom has a very similar, personal goal this season. simple and easy to understand, and very primal. And just as with Wells last year, Zoom doesn’t care who gets hurt or what gets destroyed in the service of him getting his goal.”
