I know what you’re thinking, the last thing this world needs is yet another adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic Christmas ghost storyA Christmas Carol. But hear me out. How about a dark and gritty horror version from producers Tom Hardy andPeaky BlindersandTaboocreator Steven Knight starring Guy Pearce and Andy Serkis? Well, if that sounds good to you, then you’re in luck as that’s just what’s heading our way this Christmas from BBC and FX.
Yes, not only does this new version ofA Christmas Carolsport the best pedigree an adaptation of thisclassic Christmas talehas seen in years, but it also looks to be going a much darker route than we have seen in the past. This includes graphic ghosts, visions of Hell, what appears to be Scrooge forcing a poor woman to undress in the name of helping her disabled and dying son (one guess who that’s supposed to be) and - gasp - some good old f-bombs tossed in there for good measure. This is surely not your mother and father’s version ofA Christmas Carolthat’s for sure.
The three-episode limited series is all set to haunt your home - you guessed it - this Christmas. It’s described as “a spine-tingling immersion into Ebenezer Scrooge’s dark night of the soul.” But for that one guy out there that somehow still doesn’t know the basics of Dickens' tale of yuletide terror, let me break it down.A Christmas Carolcenters on a mean old curmudgeon named Ebenezer Scrooge, who hates all things Christmas. Fittingly then, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his old business partner Jacob Marley one cold Christmas Eve night and told he will be visited by three ghosts. And just in case there is someone out there that hasn’t read Dickens' novel, or seen one of the many endless adaptations of the tale produced throughout the years, I’m not going to go into further spoilers here. You get the point.
