With 2016 coming to an end, fans will be innundated with a number of year-end lists, including top 10 lists for movies, TV shows, music and more, but today we have a different kind of top 10. The social networking site Twitter released some of its year-end data, revealing that HBO’sGame of Thronesis thetop trending TV showof 2016. This medieval fantasy series also landed on the top 10 trending topics list for the year as well.
Entertainment Weeklyreports thatThe Walking Deadis just behindGame of Throneson the TV trending top 10, although there are a few international entries on the list as well.Grey’s Anatomyranks third on the TV trending list, followed by the Korean TV seriesDescendants of the SunandMasterChef Brazilrounding out the top 5. Netflix’sOrange is the New BlackandStrange Thingstake the sixth and seventh places, respectively, followed by NBC’sThe Voiceand anotherinternational TV series,Big Brother Brazilin the 10-spot.
Game of Throneswas also the only TV series to land in the top 10trending topicsof 2016. Rio 2016 landed at the top of this list, which isn’t surprising considering the global coverage of the Rio Olympics, followed by Election 2016 betweenDonald TrumpandHillary Clinton, the hit augmented reality app Pokemon Go, the Euro2016 soccer tournament and the Oscars rounding out the top 5. The highly controversial Brexit was in sixth place, followed by Black Lives Matter, Trump, RIP andGame of Thronesin the 10th spot. While the show only aired for 10 weeks out of the year, it often dominated the social media landscape, even before this highly-anticipated Season 6 debuted.
Game of ThronesSeason 6 was perhaps the most highly-anticipated season in the show’s storied history, for a few different reasons. For one, it was the first season that surpassed the novels ofGeorge R.R. Martin, since the author still hasn’t finished his sixth and seventh novels in hisA Song of Fire and Iceseries. The show’s producers didn’t reveal any new cast members at Comic-Con, and didn’t confirm any plot rumors throughout the production. After the death ofJon Snowin the Season 5 finale, fans were forced to wait months until Season 6 arrived, to find out if he was actually dead or not, with the second episode revealing that he was brought back to life by the red priestess Melissandre.
It’s completely possible that, by this time next year,Game of Throneswill remain on these top trending charts, following the truncated Season 7. It has been confirmed that there will only be seven episodes airing inGame of ThronesSeason 7, with the eighth and final season reportedly comprised of just six episodes. Fans will have to wait a bit longer for Season 7 as well, since production was delayed by a few months, since the production now requires a colder climate, since winter has finally arrived in Westeros.
