Fans ofThe Mandalorianmay not have seen the last of Moff Gideon, despite witnessing what appeared to be his fiery demise during the show’s Season 3 finale. In a recent interview,Giancarlo Espositoteased a possible return to theStar Warsuniverse asThe Mandalorian’s primary antagonist, stating that he didn’t believe the story was over just yet for Moff Gideon.
For better or worse,Star Warsis no stranger to faking the death of a feared villain or beloved hero, so it wouldn’t be a stretch for writer and director Jon Favreau to imagine some way that Moff Gideon could have survived an otherwise fatal explosion. And with Esposito expressing genuine enthusiasm to revisit the role, it seems like a major misstep not to bring such a talented and dedicated actor back for futureMandalorianprojects. Speaking withEmpire, Esposito was careful not to give away any major spoilers but hinted that a return for Moff Gideon could very well be in the cards.

There is a big movie coming out that’s focusing on Mando and The Child. I can’t say it’ll be that. But I hope to be able to join that franchise again, because I think there’s more road for Moff Gideon.
Esposito appeared as Gideon in all three seasons ofThe Mandalorian, tirelessly pursuing Grogu in order to use his Force sensitivity to enhance an army of clones. Although manyStar Warsspinoff projects have received less-than-glowing reviews,The Mandalorianwas consistently a crowd-pleaserfor a myriad of reasons — one of them being the show’s stellar primary antagonist. Esposito’s Moff Gideon was ruthless, manipulative, and wickedly intelligent, embodying a desire for ultimate power and control that led him to commit chilling actions without remorse.

7 Things The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie Needs to Get Right
The newly announced Mandalorian & Grogu film is leading Star Wars into the future. Here’s what it needs to successfully jump from Disney+ to theaters.
For Esposito, this portrayal was also a very personal and meaningful choice. When reflecting on his time as Gideon, Esposito stated: “Moff Gideon, to me, was ultimately that young boy who never had any power, who was always questioned about the color of his skin. ‘Are you white? Are you Black? Your hair is kind of curly?’ And he then took on this place for me, where he was ultimatelythepower, not only because of his physicality, but because of hisbrain.” So whether Moff Gideon makes a glorious return or remains in his fiery grave, it’s clear that Esposito had a unique understanding of his role inThe Mandalorian’s story, which allowed him to createone of the most feared villains in theStar Warsuniverse.

What’s Next ForThe Mandalorian?
As a veteran actor, Esposito isn’t going to give away any accidental spoilers about his potential involvement in futureStar Warsprojects. Although hisinterview referencedThe Mandalorian & Grogumovie that’s currently in development, it’s impossible to say whether Esposito will have a place in that project. The film isn’t scheduled to premiere until 2026, so there’s still a chance that he is involved and simply waiting for the right time to announce it —such as during theStar Warscelebrationin mid-April, which will feature a panel discussingThe Mandalorian & Grogu.
However, even if Esposito doesn’t return in Favreau’s film, there’s still the unanswered question of a fourthMandalorianseason. Sources have gone back and forth on whetherThe Mandalorianwill return to the small screen, and as of yet,no real determination has been made either way. LucasFilm has recently begun to focus on developing theatrical releases rather than television shows to streamlineStar Warscontent, which could indicate an untimely end forThe Mandalorian. However, Favreau has also stated that he’s completed a script for the fourth season, and some insiders report that development has already begun.

But without an official cancelation, there’s still hope forThe Mandalorianseason four. And if Moff Gideon can survive a fiery explosion,The Mandaloriancan surely overcome the horrors of Disney bureaucracy.
