The upcoming Monsterverse movieGodzilla X Kong: Supernovais shaping up to be the biggest film in the franchise yet. Originally intended to serve as an exciting conclusion to the franchise,Godzilla vs. Kong(2021) ultimately reinvigorated the series, paving the way for the sequel,Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire. However, one constant complaint that has been levied against the series since 2014, with Gareth Edwards’Godzilla, is a lack of an engaging human narrative to pair with the intense kaiju fights. According to one actor in the upcoming film, that specific complaint will be addressed in Supernova.

Godzilla Is Taking on a Form He Has Shockingly Never Been Seen in Throughout His 70-Year History

The mythical titan of cinema is getting a major transformation away from the screen.

In an interview with KTVU in Oakland, Delroy Lindo, who recently made waves for his performance as Delta Slim inRyan Coogler’s Sinners, talked about his upcoming role inGodzilla X Kong: Supernova. As the actor would tell the news station, it was the production team’s dedication to crafting an engaging human character that excited the actor about the project. According to Lindo, the human elements just as important as the monster action:

Godzilla in the third feature of Legendary’s MonsterVerse franchise Godzilla: King of the Monsters

“I appreciated the fact that these producers are equally cognizant of the fact that the human element in these narratives needs to be as strong as possible. And from that standpoint, they worked with me to flesh out the character they wanted me to play…we worked to flesh out the character and make the character as humanly relatable as possible, because they very smartly understand that in order to make these big CGI-inspired films work, the human element also has to be compelling for audiences.”

‘Godzilla X Kong: Supernova’ Has An Impressive All-Star Cast

Much of the criticism towards the less well-received films in the MonsterVerse, such as the 2019 filmGodzilla: King of the Monsters, stemmed from poorly developed human antagonists whose motives and reasoning were hardly convincing. There would be some slight improvement in the human cast for films likeKong: Skull IslandandGodzilla vs. Kong, in which charming actors like Alexander Skarsgård and Brian Tyree Henry would make the Hollow Earth story more entertaining from a human perspective. Dan Stevens' character Trapper inThe New Empirewould prove to be a popular addition, as the character is set to return inSupernovaas well.

Joining Delroy Lindo and Dan Stevens in the newGodzilla X Kongmovie areThe Last of Usseason 3 star Kaitlyn Dever, Sam Neill, Matthew Modine, and Lindo’sSinnersco-star Jack O’Connell. The MonsterVerse movies have always featured impressive casts, although the scripts for films likeKing of the Monstersdidn’t always do the actors' justice, resulting in awkward character moments that undermine what could have been great performances.

Still from ‘Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire’

Godzilla X Kong: Supernovais directed by Grant Sputore, who previously directed the 2019 science fiction thrillerI Am Mother, and is written by David Callaham and Michael Lloyd Green. Callaham previously co-wrote films likeShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsandSpider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which could be strong testaments to the writer’s ability to craft engaging human narratives within the backdrop of larger-than-life sci-fi stories. With a 2027 release date,Godzilla X Kong: Supernovais shaping up to be one of the biggest releases of that year.
