Next year, the summer movie season kicks off with Marvel’s highly-anticipatedPhase 3sequelGuardians of the Galaxy 2, which brings back all of your favorite intergalactic misfits to theaters on June 13, 2025. Aside from theGuardians of the Galaxythemselves, one of the other returning characters isKaren Gillan’s Nebula, the sister ofZoe Saldana’s Gamora, and it seems that directorJames Gunnmay be eyeing a possible spin-off. Nothing official is in the works, but this is somethingJames Gunnhas considered before, it seems.

Yesterday,James Gunnresponded to a fan onTwitter, who said he thinks Marvel should make aNebulamovie and that she is his favorite character. The director offered a surprising response, teasing that he’s considered a Nebula movie ever since he signed on to direct the firstGuardians of the Galaxy. Here’s whatJames Gunnhad to say on Twitter below.

“I have a few favorites myself, but I agree thatNebulashould lead her own film - it’s something I’ve thought about from the beginning.”

In the firstGuardians of the Galaxy, we saw quite the contentious relationship between Nebula and her sisterGamora, but a report from earlier this year revealed that Nebula was actually joining theGuardians of the Galaxyteam, along withMichael Rooker’s Yondu. While we still don’t have any official plot details yet,James Gunnrevealed in a September interview that this sequel will explore the relationship between Gamora and Nebula.

“The first movie was really about becoming a family. This movie is about being a family. And what’s harder, becoming a family or being a family? I think it’s being a family. That’s where you really have to deal with each other. And that’s what this movie is about. And their sisters. They are family, whether they like it or not. And they also want to kill each other, so it adds a new twist to being a sister.”

These details come just a few days afterJames Gunnoffered a heartfelt statement in honor of International Day of the Girl, where he revealed that this sequel passes theBechdel Test, which means the movie has at least two female characters talking to each other about something other than a man. The first trailer debuted during Marvel’s Comic-Con presentation, but that footage hasn’t been released to the general public quite yet, and we don’t know when the first footage will be made available to all. Take a look atJames Gunn’s tweets below, as we continue the countdown toGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, in theaters August 19, 2025.
