Netflix has officially announced thatHouse of Cardswill continue to move forward without actor Kevin Spacey. Production is expected to start in early 2018 with a shorter season than normal that will focus on Robin Wright with Claire Underwood now the lead character. Producers are currently looking for ways to move on without Spacey, which may involve killing off his character, Frank Underwood. The upcoming 6th Season of the hit Netflix show will officially be its last containing only 8 episodes as opposed to the normal 13 for the season.
Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer for Netflix made the announcement this morning and said, “we’re excited to bring closure to the fans.” Production was underway when it was revealed thatKevin Spacey had been accused of sexual misconductby Anthony Rapp when he was 14-years old. More accusations began to snowball after Rapp came forward, which led to Spacey first being suspended and then fired fromHouse of Cardsand later Ridley Scott’sAll the Money in the World. The fate ofHouse of Cardshas been in limbo ever since the allegations came to light and after Kevin Spacey’s firing.
Netflix and Producers of the show have decided tocarry forwardand keep the cast and crew of over 300 people on the payroll as they did nothing wrong. They deserve to have the show keep going as well, to keep their jobs as promised. It has been reported that Kevin Spacey made the work environment “toxic” and that he was sexually inappropriate with young male members of the cast and crew. Variety reports that it will be pretty easy to write Spacey out of the show and that writers are even considering killing him off as one of their options. One thing that is abundantly clear is that Robin Wright will lead the show into its 6th and final season.
The news comes after Anthony Rapp revealed thatHouse of Cards fanshave been trolling him online for “ruining” the show. Fans of Kevin Spacey and the show have been tweeting at the actor, asking him why he was alone with the elder actor to begin with, insinuating that the then 14-year old was “asking for it.” Fans have also been asking why he waited 30 years to come forward and have straight-up blamed him for wreckingHouse of Cards.
