Deadpool & Wolverinewill bringHugh Jackmanback to the role he seemed to have left behind in 2019’s Logan, but things could have been very different if the actor’s original Wolverine audition had been the end of the story. Although it is impossible to imagine anyone else taking on the role of Wolverine – something that is making recasting the role for future MCU appearances a bit of a nightmare – the actor’s initial audition seemed to be going nowhere other than sharing a meal with then-producer’s assistantKevin Feige.

During an interview withEntertainment Weekly, Jackman recalled how he was asked to go and audition for the role of Wolverine back in 1999, but at the time, the role had already been given to Dougray Scott. Jackman remembered reading lines for director Bryan Singer and screenwriter Tom DeSantos, saying:

“He’s just going, ‘Quiet… Quieter… Quieter.’ By the end, I couldn’t even hear myself. I could tell he was like, Why on my lunch hour am I auditioning some guy for a part that I’ve already cast? He was pissed off.”

Deadpool & Wolverine

A follow-up to the highly successful Deadpool and Deadpool 2 films starring Ryan Reynolds as the Merc with a Mouth. The third film will be the first in the franchise to be developed under the Marvel Studios banner following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

However behind the scenes, Scott was about to have a scheduling conflict with his work onMission: Impossible 2and would have to pull out of 2000’sX-Menafter filming began. None of this was known to Jackman following his seemingly disastrous audition, and he left feeling like it had all been a waste of time. However, Feige didn’t let him go without doing something to cheer him up – offering to take him for a steak dinner. Jackman explained:

“I said, ‘Kevin, we all know I’m not getting the part. You don’t have to do dinner. But no, he sat in there and had a steak dinner with me and then drove me to the airport. I’ll never forget it. That was the nicest thing. I thought, ‘I’ll never see him again.'”
