I Know What You Did Last Summer
In February 2023, the news broke that both Hewitt and Prinze Jr. were “in talks” to reprise the roles they portrayed in both the 1997 classic and its sequel,I Still Know What You Did Last Summer(1998). The news came on the heels of theI Know What You Did Last SummerPrime Video series being canceled after only one season. In 2025, the story’s legacy will continue, and the new film will drop some 52 years after author Lois Duncan first wrote the original young adult tale.
I Know What You Did Last Summer’s Legacy
Lois Duncan’s 1973 young adult novel,I Know What You Did Last Summer, was adapted for the big screen in 1997, but theJennifer Love Hewitt-led filmisn’t faithful to its source material. First, the book is a suspenseful YA mystery, and the big-screen version is a slasher flick. Second, while all four characters (Julie, Ray, Barry and Helen) from the novel are in the movie, their fates are quite different on-screen.
Plus, the duality of the Bud/Collie character from the novel was omitted from the 1997 project, and the cool twist revolving around Ray at the end is completely lost on the big screen. Hewitt played Ray’s love interest, Julie, and the actress discussed what returning to the role for a legacy sequel might mean to her. Hewitt said in an interview withEntertainment Tonight:

“It honestly is wild to even think about. If it truly comes together,I don’t even know how I’m gonna feel except extremely overwhelmed and grateful. But it’s wild to think about. It’s nice to know that people are excited at the possibility.I think it would be really fun if it came together.”
Meanwhile, Freddie Prinze Jr. portrayed Ray in the 1997 original and 1998 sequel, and the actor has confirmed thathe spoke withI Know What You Did Last Summer(2025) director,Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. Prinze Jr. said in an interview withComicBook.com:

“Original Films announced that Love [Jennifer Love Hewitt] and I were doing it, but they haven’t offered me anything.I sat and met with the director after they made that announcement, which I shouldn’t have done by the way. But it happens in our business all the time.I sat with the director, and she pitched me a cool idea. But we’ll see like that.”
