It’s official!Jennifer Love Hewittisreturning as Julie Jamesin the highly-anticipatedI Know What You Did Last Summerlegacy sequel. Hewitt starred as James in the 1997 original horror classic, and reprised the role again in 1998’sI Still Know What You Did Last Summer. Up until this point, her involvement in the latest sequel had only been speculated upon, but noweverything has been finally signed, sealed, and delivered.

Hewitt took to social media to make the big announcement (seen below), posting a photo of herself onInstagramlooking into a mirror with cards featuring the film’s title all around her.“It’s never too late to go back,“she said in the caption, before adding:

Julie James is returning. I know what you’ll be doing next summer!

Why the Author of This 1997 Thriller Hated the Film Adaptation

Despite being a slasher staple, I Know What You Did Last Summer attracted the ire of author Lois Duncan, who wrote the novel the film was based upon.

Directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, plot details remain under wraps for theI Know What You Did Last Summerlegacy sequel, but we do know that, in addition to Hewitt, it willalso feature the return of Freddie Prinze Jr., who will reprise his role of Ray Bronson. Additional cast members include Chase Sui Wonders, Madelyn Cline, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Haur-King. Sarah Michelle Geller won’t be present, of course, considering her character of Helen Shivers died in the original. That didn’t stop herfrom sharing a recent set photo, though, as she was on hand to support Robinson, and cheer on her husband.

The Fisherman Is Also Returning, or Is He?

While little is known at this point about theIKWYDLSlegacy sequel, it has at least been confirmed that The Fisherman will make his triumphant – and bloody – return to the franchise. Production is now underway on the movie, and earlier this month Sony shared a behind-the-scenes photoon their Instagram accountthat showcases the iconic hookused to dispatch more than a few teenagers in the original films.

Of course, that could all just be a ruse to help keep things under wraps. While we saw the hook, we didn’t see the man himself. For all we know,it could be another character taking on his persona, much like Ghostface is portrayed by different people in theScreamfranchise. At this point, we’re not ruling anything out, especially considering we don’t know where the new film fits on the timeline of things. Will itcompletely ignore the eventsin the awful direct-to-DVD filmI’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer? God, we hope so.

Either way, we’re super excited that everything is official and Hewitt is returning. The legacy sequeljust wouldn’t be the same without her, and now that all the pieces are in place, here’s hoping that Robinson and everyone involved in the production will be able to craft a worthy entry in what’s been a beloved – albeit stagnant – franchise for more than 25 years. Look for theI Know What You Did Last Summersequel to open nationwideon July 20, 2025, from Sony Pictures, and catch the original film and its successor available now on all VOD platforms.
