Last month, 20th Century Fox released a new clip fromIndependence Day: Resurgencethat featured a glimpse atBrackish Okun(Brent Spiner), one of the many returning characters from the 1996 blockbusterIndependence Day. This clip features the good doctor reuniting with President Whitmore (Bill Pullman), who looks surprised to see him, commenting that he’s “awake.” At the time, we didn’t know what Whitmore was referring to, but today we have a new viral video that sheds some light on Dr. Okun’s background, and that he’s actually been in a coma for the past 20 years.
This video, which debuted on 20th Century Fox’sYouTubechannel, sheds new light on Dr. Okun, one of the heroes of theWar of 1996. This video reveals that Okun graduated from Cal Tech in 1972, and he was recruited for a highly-classified position at Area 51, where his knowledge of the aliens was essential in the humans' victory in the War of 1996. Tragically, during an alien attack, Okun suffered critical injuries and slipped into a coma, where he remained, presumably, until the events ofIndependence Day: Resurgence.

The originalIndependence Dayshattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year’s top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500 million internationally. It’s domestic take of $306.1 million in 1996 would equate to $594.3 million today, when adjusted for inflation. We’ll have to wait and see if the sequel can out-gross its predecessor whenIndependence Day 2hits theaters on June 24.
