Over the past year, Netflix’s animation department has seen some cutbacks, including budget reductions, layoffs, and even cancelations of animation projects. With this downsizing, it is natural for Netflix users to wonder what is in store for the future of the Netflix animation department and what else might be on the chopping block. We already know there will be a reduction in the quantity of animated shows and movies being produced, but we certainly hope the cutbacks don’t hurt the quality of the projects in progress.
One such show that could be affected by these changes is the popular animated showArcane. The Netflix series, based on theLeague of Legendsgame universe, is set to release itssecond season in late 2024. However, there is no official release date yet, and with the current situation at Netflix’s animation department, we can only hope that the show isn’t canceled or a sub-par season is released as a result. But is the show really in danger of being canceled? We will explore here what the likelihood of that is and how a successful second season may actually turn things around at Netflix.

Is Arcane Being Canceled?
Currently, we are operating under the notion that no news is good news. There has been no official cancelation ofArcane. On the other hand, no definitive release date has been announced yet. With so much uncertainty, it makes us wonder if the show is at risk of cancelation. Our two cents: despite the downsizing, it is unlikely, although not impossible, thatArcanewill be canceled because it is one of Netflix’s best-performing shows, animated or otherwise.
The show was adapted from the popular video gameLeague of Legends, and although some were skeptical at first of the show adaptation, it proved to be extremely successful and well-received. With good audience and critic ratings and reviews, the show wasnominated for five Emmys and won four. With this level of success, we believeArcaneis safe from being canceled.

However, there is certainly a possibility that the quality of the show may be impacted by the cutbacks. We certainly hope this is not the case, but with the current direction of the animation department at Netflix, it is quite possible that the second season may fall short of the first. On the contrary, however, perhaps if thesecond season ofArcaneis successful, it could prove to Netflix that animation is worth investing in.

While raunchy comedies like Family Guy might come to mind when thinking of adult animated shows, these 11 prove there’s so much more to tune into.
Could Arcane Revive Netflix’s Investment in Animation?
Luckily,Arcaneis in the unique position of potentially having a big impact on the future of Netflix’s animation department. If the second season can match or, better yet, exceed the same standard of quality as the first, it could prove toNetflix that animation is worth investing in. With the first season receiving overwhelmingly positive feedback, this is no small task. But the potential is there. Some fans have even drawn parallels betweenArcaneand the successful and beloved animated showAvatar the Last Airbender.
Avatarhas been deemed one of the greatest animated shows ever created and is cherished by many for its quality storytelling, character development, world-building, and themes, and althoughArcanedeals with more mature and graphic subject matter, this comparison is high praise. It also suggests thatArcanehas the potential to be ashow that is lovedby many for generations to come, but only if adequate time and resources are dedicated to its production.

Skull Island creator Brian Duffield says the series is ready for a second season.
Too Much Has Been Left Unresolved
It goes without saying that a show with this level of potential has so much more story to tell. The show leaves off on a massive cliffhanger after Jinx confronts her sister and Silco and is forced to choose between two versions of herself: Powder, the little sister of Vi who tried so hard to help but only ever seemed to ruin things, and Jinx, the chaotic, dangerous, and unhinged woman she was evolved into after she got her friends killed and her sister left.
In deciding between who she really was and who everyone wanted her to be, she ended up killing Silco, who had taken her in and became a father to her, but still, she came to realize that she could never go back to being Powder. Instead, she decides to use the stolen gemstone to launch a rocket-type weapon at the Piltover Capital.

With such a dramatic end and no resolution to be had, there is practically no way that Netflix won’t continue such a successful project with so much unlocked potential. Plus, if they were to cancel it, fans would surely be in an uproar about it. Luckily, as far as we know, season two is still a work in progress.
