Merced will portray the winged, Thanagarian Mace-wielding superhero in James Gunn’s upcomingSupermanmovie, formerlySuperman: Legacy.While promoting her upcoming film,Turtles All the Way Down,Merced discussed the casting of her DCU co-stars,Nathan Fillionand Edi Gathegi, who portray Green Lantern and Mr. Fantastic respectively. Merced, who is “really excited to work with” Fillion, toldScreen Rant:

He’s [Fillion] a great Green Lantern casting choice and Edi Gathegi is amazing, as well as Mr. Terrific.

Merced also revealed that theSupermanteam was likely planning “to film the first stuff” on Sunday, August 7. And while observing the surroundings of her interviewer, Andy Behbakht, Merced spotted some DC-related memorabilia during their video call. Among the items there was a life-sized Green Lantern ring battery, an image of Tom Welling’s Clark Kent fromSmallvilleand some other Superman paraphernalia.

The actress then revealed what a Superman fan Nathan Fillion actually is. Merced told Behbakht during the same video chat:

“Well, I have to say your house reminds me ofNathan Fillion’s house.He has aSuperman doormat,and he hasa doorbell actually plays the theme of Supermanentering his Fortress of Solitude. It plays the theme when you walk into the house, and I’m really excited to work with him.”

Before Isabela Merced takes flight as Hawkgirl, theSupermanco-star is headlining the romantic dramaTurtles All the Way Down.There is obviously a lot expected fromthe adaptation of John Green’s 2017 young adult novelof the same name. However, Merced had the opportunity to lean heavily on the author for guidance when it came to portraying the movie’s main character, Aza Holmes. Merced said in the same interview:

“I had John Green to refer to and to defer to, he always was there for me. He’s a producer of this movie, and even just watching him — because this character is basically like him and a very honest depiction of his struggle — I pretty much just watched him and his mannerisms and the way he talked.”

Merced continued:

“I parented him in somewhat of a subconscious way, and also just have a lot in common with Aza. Although I don’t suffer from OCD, I am a very anxious person and probably won’t get around with some undiagnosed stuff, too. But I feel like Aza. And I have everything in common, minus her being an introvert and me being an extrovert.”
