TheSupergirl Season 2 Premiereon The CW set a ratings record for the network on Monday night, setting the tone for the season ahead. During a press screening for the second episode on Tuesday, executive producerAndrew Kreisbergrevealed thatMehcad Brooks' Jimmy Olsen will in fact become the DC Comics hero The Guardian, signalling yet another big shift between Jimmy’s character in the comics and the series. Earlier today,Mehcad Brookshimself took to social media, to give fans the first look at Jimmy suited up as The Guardian.
This newInstagramphoto reveals that The Guardian costume will be much different than the comics as well. The character was originally created byJack KirbyandJoe Simon, portrayed as a Metropolis cop named Jim Harper who covered the Suicide Slum section of the city, before he became a vigilante to protect the city from its criminals.Andrew Kriesbergteased at yesterday’s screening (via TV Line), that he won’t be tellingKara Zor-El(Melissa Benoist) his secret. Here’s what he had to say below.
“James is going to decide that he can no longer be a sidekick, so he’s going to become a vigilante. He’s going to become Guardian, complete with the shield, which is going to cause a massive problem in his relationship with Kara because he decides not to tell her. There’s this newmasked vigilante, and she has her own feelings about vigilantes. … And he’s recruited Winn to help him. Winn is his man in the van. Winn and James together is like comedy gold.”
This comes after the events in the season premiere, where both Kara ended her romantic relationship with Jimmy, which will certainly become more complicated with Jimmy keeping this vigilante secret from Kara. When asked why they decided to put an end to theJimmy Olsenromance,Andrew Kreisbergsaid they were pursuing that relationship for the wrong reasons. Here’s what he had to say below.
“We sort of felt like we were pursuing that relationship more because we felt like we had to than any of us was really truly feeling it. We realized the best scenes between them were the nice, sweet scenes where they were being friends.”
While we don’t know exactly when they will happen yet,Supergirlwill be involved in two different crossovers this season, one withArrow,The FlashandLegends of Tomorrow, where all four heroes will face The Dominators, and amusical crossoverwithThe Flash. We also don’t know when Jimmy Olsen will transform into The Guardian, but we’ll keep you posted with more details.
