David Fincher’sGone Girlwould have starredJon Hammif not for scheduling conflicts getting in the way. Released in 2014,Gone Girlwas directed by Fincher and written by Gillian Flynn, who also authored the original book the film is based on. The movie stars Ben Affleck as a man who becomes the prime suspect in the sudden disappearance of his wife (Rosamund Pike). Upon release, it pulled in more than $369 million at the box office, makingGone GirlFincher’s highest-grossing film. It was also up for many awards, including a Best Actress Oscar for Pike, and the reviews were quite positive, landing at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.
On a recent episode ofWatch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, Hamm addressed the rumor that he was originally up for the lead role inGone Girl. The actor confirms that he came very close to starring in the film, but the timing ultimately didn’t work out, given Hamm’s commitments to the AMC seriesMad Men.

“Yeah, I was down to the very end of that,” Hamm explains. “That was meant to be me, but we had to film the continuing adventures of Mr. Draper. Because the main character inGone Girlis from St. Louis, so they were excited.”
Hamm is from St. Louis, so he would have found it fun to revisit his hometown to shoot the movie, but it wasn’t meant to be. With that said, Hamm also sees the humor in the situation over Affleck getting the role after his exit, amused by how the character was a fan of a rival sports team.
“And poor Ben, a Boston guy, had to wear a Cardinals hat. He was not very happy about it," Hamm said

Will Gone Girl Get a Sequel?
Perhaps Hamm can still get involved with theGone Girluniverse if the sequel ever gets off the ground. Gillian Flynn teased back in 2015 that she was open to continuing the story in a follow-up film, but it might be a “few years” away from that, depending upon lining up the schedules of all of the original cast and crew. While there haven’t been any significant updates on the potential sequel since, the film is not outside of the realm of possibility, given how seemingly every other movie is getting a legacy sequel these days.
“There could be a sequel at some point if everyone is game to get the gang back together, it could be really fun a few years from now,” Flynn told theNew York Daily Newsat the time. “We could pick it up and see what those crazy Dunnes are up to a few years down the road and if they got on – not well, I don’t think.”
Time will tell if the sequel comes to be. Meanwhile, if you want to revisit the original movie, you can watchGone Girlby streaming the film on Max.
