Following the debut of Spielberg’sJurassic Parkin the early ’90s, the film has since morphed into a major franchise and has raked in billions at the box office. However, last year, the franchiseseemingly came to a closewith the Colin Trevorrow directed film,Jurassic World: Dominion. The sixth installment in the franchise wrapped up storylines for its original characters and saw Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldbum reprise their roles.
Last September, Trevorrow (who directed two of the threeJurassic Worldmovies), toldEmpirethat the original film probablynever even needed a follow-upin the first place.
TheJurassic World: Dominiondirector said to the outlet, “I specifically did something different than the other films in order to change the DNA of the franchise. The previous five films are plots about dinosaurs. This one is a story about characters in a world in which they coexist with dinosaurs. For the franchise to be able to move forward — because it’s inherently unfranchisable, there probably should have only been oneJurassic Park— but if we’re gonna do it, how can I allow them to tell stories in a world in which dinosaurs exist, as opposed to, here’s another reason why we’re going to an island?”
Trevorrow later revealed that he wasn’t aware thatDominionwas meant to be the final film until he saw the tagline on posters for the movie declaring Dominion, “The epic conclusion of the Jurassic era.”
The director admitted, “I never knew that this was the ending of the franchise until I saw the marketing.”
