For years, fans of the DC universe have eagerly anticipated the return of one of its most enigmatic characters on the big screen:Keanu Reeves’ John Constantine. After decades of false-starts, complete abandonment, and more recent rumors, a new update has suggested that the long-delayed follow-up to 1997’sConstantineis still very much alive and could still become a reality for those who have been patiently waiting for it to happen.
Director Francis Lawrencerecently answered the question of what is happening withConstantine 2during an interview withCollider, and his comments may not be categorically conclusive, but they certainly spark up debates about the possibility of this fan pipe-dream actually becoming reality. Lawrence said tantalizingly of the sequel:

“I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing. And Akiva, Keanu and I are super, super excited about it.”
Of course, there are many hurdles to be jumped for a movie everyone is excited about, but nothing has been concretely confirmed. The biggest of these will no doubt be where the sequel would sit within other DC plans, as this would obviously be an “Elseworlds” project, which would sit in the same non-DCU space asThe BatmanandJokerfranchises.

Will ‘Constantine 2’ Actually Happen?
There are some questions that can not be answered until they are answered, and this is one such query. The only time anyone will be able to accept for certain thatConstantine 2is happening is when it gets an official confirmation from DC Studios, a filming start date, and a release date. Even then, there is always that chance that it could become a tragic tax write off.
The road to this point has not been smooth. The idea for aConstantinesequel has been rolling around in Rumorland for a long, long time. The performance of the originalConstantinewas good, but not successful enough for a sequel to actually get off the ground at the time. Now, decades later, the revival of this iteration of Constantinehas the added backing of the world’s incredible drive for nostalgic legacy sequels to help it over the threshold, so it does have a better chance of being made right now more than ever.

In recent years, Reeves has been stepping back into some of his best known roles, such as returning to play Neo inThe Matrix Resurrections, and Ted inBill & Ted Face the Music. While the results were somewhat mixed, that has not quelled the calls for Reeves to bring back John Constantine for another brutal outing as the DC Comics demonologist.
The One Role Keanu Reeves Wants to Play Again (But Couldn’t Make Happen)
As Hollywood’s nicest guy, it seems almost unforgivable that Keanu Reeves wanted to play this role again but hasn’t been able to make it happen.
Naturally, with so many moving pieces, there is as much chance ofConstantine 2never happening as there is of it being made and released in the next two to three years. The only thing certain right now is that everyone involved seems to be intent on making it happen, and with continued support from fans of the character - and particularly Reeves' interpretation of him - stranger things have happened in Hollywood.
