Oh, what could have been. Or maybe what still could be? The trailer for SyFy’s recently canceledTremorsTV series, which finally would have brought Kevin Bacon back to the franchise after nearly three decades, has leaked online. It’s unclear who leaked the footage at the present time but what is clear is that horror and monster fans are losing out in a big way as this show looks like it could have potentially been pretty great.
As revealed in the trailer, theTremorsTV series would have seemingly ignored most of the events of the sequels, as it’s explained that noGraboidshave been seen since Kevin Bacon’s Valentine McKee helped do away with them during the events of the original 1990 movie. He’s become a hometown hero and something of a legend in the town of Perfection, but he hasn’t done much else with his life. So we when he suspects that the giant, deadly sandworms are making a comeback, the people of Perfection aren’t inclined to believe him. At least not at first. Then we get some super cool Graboid action that forces people to get with the program.
The trailer looks like the best type of modern sequel/reboot that one could hope for. While there are those who have enjoyed some of theTremorssequels, which have featured Michael Gross asBurt Gummer, who was introduced in the original movie with Valentine McKee, to anchor them,this series was going to take a different approach. We recently had the chance to speak with Gross ahead of the release ofTremors: A Cold Day in Hell. He expressed his disappointment for not being included in the new series, but given the plot, it makes sense to some degree that he wouldn’t be involved.
Fred Ward, on the other hand, was set to joinKevin Baconin theTremorsTV series. The pilot, which wrapped filming in November of last year, was directed by Vincenzo Natali (Splice) and, for the time being, it’s unclear as to why SyFy decided to pass on it. But who knows?Deadpoolonly got made because of the famously leaked test footage, which resulted in fans essentially forcing Fox to greenlight the movie and that worked out pretty well for everyone.
Maybe the reaction to this trailer, which has been extremely positive thus far, will force Syfy to reconsider their position oncanceling the Tremors TV show. Or perhaps it will result in another network, or a streaming service like Netflix or Amazon, to come in and resurrect the show. One can only hope.Tremorsis a recognizable property and networks need to do anything they can to get an edge in competing for eyeballs. Having Kevin Bacon back in what looks to be a great take onTremorsmay do the trick if someone is willing to take a chance on it.
