Kingsman: The Secret Servicewas one of the biggest surprise hits of 2014. In a lot of ways it mirrored what happened withDeadpoolthis year, only that it wasn’t quite as successful. But, it was a super violent, R-rated comic book movie that made a boatload of money for Fox. SoKingsman 2is happening and it is coming out next year. StarTaron Egertonrecently talked a bit about what we can expect and he seems to be saying all of the right things.
The actor recently spoke withColliderabout the upcoming sequel, officially titledKingsman: The Golden Circle.Taron Egertonclaims that directorMatthew Vaughnand his co-writerJane Goldmancrafted an excellent script and are only doing the movie because they came up with a story well worth telling. Here is what he had to say.
“I remember when we finished the first one I was like, ‘This is a franchise right?’ and [Vaughn] said, ‘Well it depends on the first one. I’m not doing it unless the script is right.’ And he went away and him and Jane Goldman, his writing partner, wrote a really bloody good script. That’s always the most important thing; good director, good script, you’re on your way. It was hard, it was a tough shoot, it always is on that thing, but I think it’s gonna be amazing.”
The good news is that it sounds likeKingsman 2has a good reason for existing, beyond Fox wanting to make more money from the franchise. The problem can oftentimes be that sequels tend to abandon what made the original so effective. That doesn’t sound as though it will be the case withKingsman: The Golden Circle. He couldn’t divulge and specific details that we didn’t already know, but here is howTaron Egertondescribes the sequel, explaining that it will be another violent, spy thriller, like the first movie.
“It’s f****** mental, but it’s what people like and it’s what Matthew is good at. It’s not for the faint of heart, but it’s awesome… It’s bigger and it feels more ambitious, really. There are more characters, the world is explored in more detail. This weird version of reality where these spies exist is kind of explored more. I know Matthew’s announced a lot about the fact that we discover a sister organization based in America called the Statesman. They’re richer than us, they’ve got cool shit.”
While it sounds likeKingsman 2will retain many of the elements that made the first one so great, there will definitely be some changes. AsTaron Egertonstates, part of the movie will be taking place in America and with that, a lot ofcast membershave been added.Channing Tatum,Julianne Moore,Jeff Bridges,Halle Berryand evenElton John. Along withTaron Egerton,Mark StrongandColin Firthare returning.
Kingsman: The Secret Servicemade a very impressive $414 million worldwide working from a relatively small $81 million production budget. The only potential bummer for those who want to seeKingsman 2is that they will have to wait a bit longer to see it, since 20th Century Fox recently bumped the release date back, moving it fromJune 16, 2017, to August 08, 2025. On the plus side, that does give directorMatthew Vaughna little more time to getKingsman: The Golden Circleright.
