Game of Throneswas almost completely snubbed from the2020 Golden Globe Award nominations, with Kit Harington serving as the only representation from the series to be up for an award. For the category of Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series - Drama, Harington was nominated for his role of Jon Snow for the eighth and final season ofGame of Thrones, and the actor has since responded to the news. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Harington revealed the nomination took him by surprise by offering this.
“I’m the ‘loner Throner,’ it seems.. I just imagine myself sitting down at a table all by myself as the ‘loner Throner!’ I didn’t expect to be nominated. I thought the show might be, but I was just at home, learning lines, and then my publicists called. It was very unexpected and wonderful… I’m happy for my nomination, and I’d love the show to be represented [more], but it won an Emmy, and it wasn’t nominated for a Globe. So I’ll represent the show on my own. I’ll do my best.”
TheGame of Thronesstar also spoke about the way his Jon Snow character’s storyline came to an end, which was among many complaints fans had about the show’s final season. After ending the Mad Queen’s short-lived reign by shoving a blade into the heart ofDaenerys Targaryen, Jon is banished to spend his days living far beyond the north side of the Wall, and we last see him venturing into the Haunted Forest with the Free Folk and the Night’s Watch. Despite what some critics say,Kit Haringtonsays this was in fact the best way to say goodbye to the character.
“For me, that’s the perfect ending for him. It’s where I wanted him to be. I didn’t want him on the throne, and I didn’t want him to be dead. I wanted him to be in the North, where he belongs. My feeling is where he ended in the show is exactly where he should have ended. There was a full-circledness to it. This [nomination] feels full circle, too. It’s a lovely way to say goodbye to the character. It’s a lovely way to say goodbye to the show. It’s perfect, in my book.”
Harington is definitely a strong contender for Best Actor, but his win is not a lock as the actor is facing some steep competition. IfGame of Throneshad been nominated for Best Television Series - Drama, it would have been going up againstThe Crown,Succession,The Morning Show,Killing Eve, andBig Little Lies. As with Harington’s nomination, the options presented are all so strong that it’s impossible to say at this point which ones will be named as the winners.
Game of Thronesmight be over, but the franchise is far from finished. After initially rejecting a proposed pilot for a prequel series led by Naomi Watts, HBO turned right around and ordered a full season of another pitched prequel series calledHouse of the Dragon. The story will be set roughly 300 years before the events ofGame of Thrones, focusing on the origins of House Targaryen. Time will tell ifHouse of the Dragonwill see the same vast levels of success as its parent series, or if it will become just as big of a hit at the Emmy Awards and Golden Globe Awards asGame of Throneshas typically been for the past several years.
Putting aside the controversy over how the final season ofGame of Throneswas handled creatively, we should all be able to agree that the acting on that show was phenomenal from beginning to end. There are definitely many other names from the show who are just as deserving as Harington for consideration at the Golden Globes, but having a “loner Throner” at the event is certainly better than none at all.
