When the iconicTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtlesreturned to the big screen in 2014, it proved to be a successful reboot, taking in $493.3 million worldwide from a $125 million budget. Despite itsbox officesuccess, many fans were disappointed that several iconic characters from both the original comic book and original animated TV series weren’t included in the movie, but that will all change with this summer’s sequelTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, arriving on June 3. Today we have a new report from Rolling Stone, which confirms that Krang will be featured in the sequel.
The site details a video conference meeting betweenTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the ShadowsproducerMichael Bayand visual effects supervisorPablo Helmanfrom Industrial Light and Magic (ILM). The villainousKrang, who was first introduced in theTeenage Mutant Ninja TurtlesanimatedTV series, is described as a “disembodied brain inside a giant robot,” which follows the character’s look from the original series. During the video call,Pablo Helmansaid his ILM team has eliminated the tentacles, before asking the director if he looks too “monster-ish.” Here’s what the director had to say about the use of tentacles on Krang.
“He could have some tentacles. I just don’t want them coming out of the side. He looks like a stupid octopus.”
Back in May, while production was still under way onTeenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows, a source involved with the production said that there was a scene that involved a number of extras, which featured Krang coming to Earth through a mysterious portal. In the original TV series, Krang hailed from a planet known asDimension X. After losing his body, Krang surfaced on Earth with his massive fortress known as the Technodrome, which serves as a portal between Dimension X and Earth. He then teamed up with Shredder, who agreed to make a new body for Krang, in exchange for letting Shredder use the Technodrome.
The video call also featuredMichael Baychiming in on two more beloved characters who will be brought back for the sequel, Bebop (Gary Anthony Williams) and Rocksteady (Stephen Farrelly). The producer says that the “mass” for each character is not right yet, while pondering if the “rhino dude” has a big enough head. It isn’t known if this call took place before or after these characters were revealed in the first trailer. Since we still have just under six months left until this sequel hits theaters, there is still plenty of time for the ILM effects team to get these characters perfect for their big screen debut.
