The phrase “quiet on the set” was stretched to the limit during the upbeat shoot ofLa Dolce Villawhen director Mark Waters (Mean Girls) had to ask his costars gently but firmly to, well, pipe down.Scott Foley(Scandal) andMaia Reficco(Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin), who play father and daughter in the heartwarmingNetflix original comedy, bonded so well on set that they had trouble dialing down the banter and laughs. “Look,” Foley noted with a smile in a recent MovieWeb interview, “it’s not that we’re unprofessional, right? I just want to get that out of the way right now.” He added:
“It’s important to develop a rapport with whoever you’re working with, and each relationship is different. And playing the father to this daughter, I thought it was important that we have a shorthand, that there was sort of inside jokes that we had. We very quickly fell into a rhythm of inappropriate banter and making each other laugh. And yes, we were ‘scolded’ a couple of times for maybe doing it when we shouldn’t have been. But I think it only enhanced the viewing experience of the film. The engines needed to be warmed up.”
Looks like Foley and Reficco’s process paid off.La Dolce Villais an audience-pleaser. The story finds a frenzied businessman (Foley) traveling to Italy to stop his optimistic daughter (Reficco) from restoring a crumbling villa. But alas, Italy proves to be all too enticing and suddenly there are more than a few hints of romance, scenic beauty, and magic all around them. The film also stars Violante Placido and Giuseppe Futia.
‘La Dolce Villa’ Is Really About Taking Chances
It’s easy to see why Foley and Reficco hit it off. The two likable actors have been winning audiences over for some time. Foley made a dent in shows likeFelicity(as Noah Crane),The Unit(as Bob), andScandal(as Jake Ballard). Reficco is fresh off a successful run inPretty Little Liars: Original Sinand starring in Broadway’sHadestown,playing Eurydice.

Here, father and daughter (Eric and Olivia) struggle to find common ground after the death of Eric’s wife/Olivia’s mother. Eric does everything he can to convince Olivia not to accept a real estate deal to buy a villa for just $1. But she dives in anyway, making this as much a film about taking chances as it is about moving through grief.
While repairs are under way, Olivia ponders her life path while Eric bonds with the mayor, Francesca (Violante Placido) and some of the other locals.
