Just a few days afterLavalantuladebuted on Syfy this weekend, the cable network has given the green light for a sequel, entitled2 Lava 2 Lantula. The title is a reference to Universal Pictures' 2003 sequel2 Fast 2 Furious, but don’t hold your breath for high-octane racing action in2 Lava 2 Lantula. Syfy will release2 Lava 2 Lantulaas a 2016summer movie, but no cast members or filmmakers have been confirmed quite yet.

Police AcademystarsSteve Guttenberg, Leslie Easterbrook, Marion Ramsey andMichael Winslowreunited to star inLavalantula, and the hope is to bring them all back. The story follows a “washed up 90s action hero actor” played bySteve Guttenberg, who joins forces with Leslie Easterbrook andMichael Winslow’s characters to stop a monstrous swarm of bloodthirsty lava-breathing tarantulas who burn their victims alive. The supporting cast includes Nia Peeples,Danny Woodburn,Ralph Garman, Marion Ramsey, Jon Mack, D.J. Pierce and Patrick Renna. We’ll have to wait and see if any of these actors return for the sequel.

Lavalantuladrew in 1.4 million viewers during its Saturday night premiere on Syfy, which was launched as a part ofSharknadoWeek on the network. The third installment of that franchise,Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, pulled in 2.8 million viewers. The ratings were down fromSharknado 2: The Second One’s 3.9 million viewers last summer, but still enough to secure a green light forSharknado 4. We reported last week that fans will actually get to vote on the fate ofTara Reid’s character April Shephard.

With2 Lava 2 Lantulamoving forward, it will likely debut in the same week asSharknado 4next summer, possibly paving the way for anotherSharknadoWeek extravaganza. LikeSharknado,Lavalantulais set in Los Angeles, but it remains to be seen if the sequel will stay in the City of Angels.Sharknado 2: The Second Onemoved the action to New York City, whileSharknado 3: Oh Hell No!was set all along the East Coast. We’ll have to wait and see if2 Lava 2 Lantulawill follow in theSharknadofranchise’s footsteps.

Since the first movie featured fourPolice Academystars, perhaps Syfy will bring in even more cast members from the 1984 comedy classic for this sequel.Kim Cattrall, G.W. Bailey andBobcat Goldthwaitstill work regularly in movies and TV, so perhaps they could be persuaded to join their former co-stars for2 Lava 2 Lantula. Mike Mendez (Big Ass Spider) directed the firstLavalantula, so we’ll have to wait and see if he will return for this upcomingmovie sequel. What do you think about2 Lava 2 Lantulamoving forward?
