‘How To Train Your Dragon’ Defies Live-Action Remake History With Sky-High Box Office Weekend
Universal and DreamWorks' reimagining of their animated classic is poised for a strong opening weekend.
How to Train Your DragonisCertified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoeswith a 77% score from critics and a near-perfect 97% on the Popcornmeter audience scale. The critic score is a far cry from the original animated movie’s rating (99%), but it is certainly hard to argue against the general consequence that the remake is a slam-dunk for Universal Pictures. With a sequel already on its way, theHow to Train Your Dragonfranchise will continue to live on in theaters for years to come and more than likely adapt the entire trilogy.

‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ Could Make a Major Change to the Original
TheHow to Train Your Dragonremake had one big ace up its sleeve, and it’s that Dean DeBlois, the original director of the animation films, returned to helm the live-action version. For better or worse, this meant that the new feature became nearly a shot-for-shot remake of the original 2010 film. It failed to explore new avenues, but still retains much of the magic of the franchise, boasting some impressive visuals and a story that still works 15 years later. However, it seems the upcoming sequel won’t have to be a paint-by-the-numbers remake.
DeBloisrecently statedthat he will address certain “regrets” he has fromHow to Train Your Dragon 2. Despite being hailed by some as the best installment of the trilogy, it seems the live-action version of the animated sequel will improve upon the original in some key ways.

“That said, there are still regrets I have — having written and directed the second film — that I would love to address in the live-action version. So, we don’t necessarily have to color inside the lines [in terms of the original’s story and plot], but it’s an exploration at the moment. I’m literally writing the script right now.”
