TheLokiseries for Disney+ is gearing up to begin filming in early 2020. This, according to star Tom Hiddleston, who will be reprising his role as Thor’s brother, aka the God of mischief. We first learned that the character would be getting his own series back in November 2018. Though, it wasn’t officially confirmed by Marvel Studios until San Diego Comic-Con a couple of weeks back, Now that the cat is out of the bag, Hiddleston has revealed when they’re going to begin production.
Tom Hiddlestonis currently playing the lead in a Broadway revival of the Harold Pinter playBetrayal. Hiddleston, in his Broadway debut, plays a man named Robert. In a recent interview, he was asked whenLokiis going to start gearing up and, while drawing some parallels between both characters, revealed when we can expect to see him suiting back up within the MCU. Here’s what Hiddleston had to say.
“Loki will start at the top of next year. He’s such a classical character. [Thor and Loki], they’re fromNorse myths, they have a kind of gravitas to them. Robert in Betrayal is much more earthbound. They’re both very complex, but Robert is a publisher and a husband and a father. Loki is the god of mischief. [Laughs] Two quite different figures.”
While precious few details regarding the show have been revealed, we knowLokiwill center on the version of the character we last saw inAvengers: Endgame. As fans may recall, during thetime heist, the Tesseract was stolen byLokiafter being captured at the end of the battle of New York. He then made his way off with it, disappearing somewhere in time and/or space. The thread wasn’t revisited in that particular movie, leaving the door wide open for a series of mischievous happenings.
It’s expected we’ll seeLokimessing with time at key points throughout history. A previously released bit of concept art revealed the character in the 70s, with aJawsmarquee displayed on a movie theater in the background. The possibilities are, quite literally, endless. It will also be interesting to see how episodic television, as a firm part of the MCU, unfolds, as that’s something relatively new. Shows likeAgents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and especially the Netflix shows, were only ever tangentially connected to the larger MCU.
Heading into Phase 4, Disney+ shows will be a huge part of the equation, in addition to the recently announced slate of movies.WandaVision,HawkeyeandThe Falcon and The Winter Soldier, as well as the animatedWhat If?series, are all on deck.Lokidoesn’t yet have a firm premiere date, but is slated to debut in Spring 2021.
