Margot Robbie, the star of theBarbiemovie, recently addressed the possibility of a sequel featuring herself, Ryan Gosling, and director Greta Gerwig, as the streaming date for the smash hit has finally been announced.
The movie made a significant impact with its blend of vibrant visuals and humor this past summer. Now, after one of the longest waits between theatrical release and streaming availability in recent years,Barbiewill finally hit Max on December 15, according toVariety. As per the report, a version of the movie incluing American Sign Language will be released on the same date.

The movie follows Barbie’s journey as she confronts banishment from her utopian Barbie Land due to perceived flaws and embarks on a self-discovery quest alongside Ken, touching upon contemporary themes that resonate with audiences. The movie’s global box office success, amassing $1.4 billion in earnings, marked it as the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing evenThe Super Mario Bros.Movie.
In a recent interview withAP Entertainment, Robbie discussed the film’s achievements and the potential for a sequel. While not dismissing the idea of a follow-up, she emphasized that they initially crafted the first movie to be a standalone success, with no concrete plans for a trilogy or sequels in mind.

“I think we put everything into this one. We didn’t build it to be a trilogy or something," Robbie said. “It was like Greta put everything into this movie, so I can’t imagine what would be next.”
Despite this, she acknowledged the importance ofBarbie’s success in the industry, showcasing that original films with substantial budgets can achieve remarkable box office results without relying on sequels, prequels, or remakes. Robbie also stressedthe significance of a female-led moviebreaking misconceptions by appealing to a broad audience, hoping it will encourage the industry to support more big original ideas with adequate budgets for their execution in the future.

“I’d say the biggest takeaway for me is that original films can still hit huge at the box office. It doesn’t have to be a sequel or a prequel or a remake. It can be totally original. It can still be big, given the big budget to do that. And just because there’s a female lead doesn’t mean it’s not going to hit all four quadrants, which is, I think, a misconception that a lot of people still have. So it’s really important that Barbie did well. As much as it is nice, it’s also really important that it does well so people can also, in the future, have big original ideas and be given the budget to execute them properly.”

Barbie’s Potential Sequel Possibilities
Thepossibilities for character development and storytellingin aBarbiesequel are vast. For instance, there’s an opportunity to delve deeper into her adventures in the human world. The first film concludes on a clever and meta note, with Barbie taking on the name “Barbara Handler” in honor of the doll’s creator, Ruth Handler, setting the stage for a new chapter in her story.
Furthermore, a sequel could explore the evolving roles of Ken and the other Kens in Barbie’s life. It’s a chance for the Kens to adapt and modernize their roles, potentially even desiring a place in the human world themselves now that Barbie has made the transition.

Greta Gerwig previously shared her openness to revisiting Barbie’s world in a potential sequel. While she currently lacks immediate ideas for a follow-up, her willingness to explore new possibilities suggests the potential for a sequel that continues to explore the complexities of Barbie’s life as a real human. She said:
“At this moment, it’s all I’ve got. I feel like that at the end of every movie, like I’ll never have another idea and everything I’ve ever wanted to do, I did. I wouldn’t want to squash anybody else’s dream but for me, at this moment, I’m at totally zero.”
