Sony Pictures saved the biggest news for last at its CinemaCon panel in Las Vegas tonight, withSpider-ManstarTom Hollandmaking a surprise appearance at the convention. The studio announced during the panel that the official title for this new adventure is Spider-Man: Homecoming, with the actor introducing never-before-seen footage, which segues into the hero’s cameo inCaptain America: Civil War. It isn’t known if the studio will make this footage available online or not, but we’ll be sure to keep you posted.
The scene that was shown to the CinemaCon crowd features Peter Parker/Spideycoming home, only to be greeted byAunt May(Marisa Tomei) andIron Man(Robert Downey Jr.), who states that Peter has applied for a special grant. This scene then leads into his cameo appearance inCaptain America: Civil War, which held its world premiere tonight in Hollywood. Sony Pictures chairmanTom Rothmanteased that “Peter (Parker) is trying to find his way home,” although he wouldn’t say anything else about the story.
Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man appearance in the footage does make sense, since this character introduced Spidey in theCaptain America: Civil Wartrailer that gave us our first look at he web-slinger. Very little is known about his involvement in theCaptain America: Civil Warstory, but it has been confirmed that the standalone reboot will skip the well-worn origin story, and follow Peter through his high school years, as he tries to balance his studies with his crime fighting activities.
We reported earlier today thatVulturemay be the primary villain, but that report wasn’t confirmed during the CinemaCon panel tonight. As for the officialtitle, Spider-Man: Homecoming was one of four different web domains registered by Sony Pictures earlier this month, including Spider-Man: Coming of Age, Spider-Man: Greatness Awaits and Spider-Man: Suspended. Now that we know what the title is, hopefully we’ll get more story details soon. Spider-Man: Homecoming is also the name of a Marvel comic book story arc that featured cameos from both Iron Man and Steve Rogers. There is also a Marvel comic book titled Mary Jane: Homecoming, which features Peter Parker fighting the Vulture.
