Marvel Studios bossKevin Feigesays that the new shows for the Disney+ streaming platform are going to tell stories that they can’t bring to life on the big screen. Feige teased some interesting news that should be exciting for Marvel Comics fans. So far, it has been revealed that aLokishow starring Tom Hiddleston is currently in development along with aScarlet Witch and Visionshow and another based onWinter Soldier & Falcon.
In a new interview, Kevin Feige shed some light on whatMarvel Studiosand Disney have planned for the upcoming shows. Much like Jon Favreau’s live-actionStar WarsseriesThe Mandalorian, there will be some pretty big budgets used on the new Marvel Cinematic Universe narratives. Feige had this to say about what the shows will be.
“When we announced ten movies and people asked Well what about these other things? the previous stance would be We only have a certain number of slots to make movies per year. That’s still true but we have another outlet that I think will be very unique and very special… We are going to tell stories for the streaming service that we wouldn’t be able to tell in a theatrical experience - a longer-form narrative, that’s what comics are, it’s about as longform a narrative as exists. But also maintaining that theatrical experience, which is our bread and butter, and the lines around the block, if you’re lucky.”
Longer-form narratives is something that comic book fans, and book fans in general, are always asking for. HBO’sGame of Thronescompletely changed the game for telling comprehensive stories that are based on books. Similarly, Marvel has already touched on this with theirNetflix shows, which were able to dive deep into characters likeThe PunisherandDaredevil. Getting to see new shows with the characters from the big screen is a whole new level for the studio and huge for Disney+.
TheDisney+ streamingplatform will debut late in 2019, but there still isn’t a whole lot of information about it at this time. However, it’s clear that Disney is diving head first into the competition with guns blazing. A live-actionStar Warsseries is huge enough of its own, but adding Marvel shows is going to be huge. Never mind the huge back catalog that the studio has of classic movies and shows.
It’s going to be very interesting to see howDisney+performs when it debuts. But, it will more than likely be a pretty big success thanks to the huge shows that are currently either filming or in development.
